Flipping over 17-year cicadas that are struggling helplessly on their backs has become a thing in my part of Maryland.
Someone posted on NextDoor that she was helping the little critters right themselves, and in almost no time dozens of others admitted to doing the same. And like me, almost everyone thought they were the only ones doing it.
I was surprised and pleased to learn that so many folks are being kind to our temporary visitors.

(14,852 posts)I've even driven to some local parks with lots of big trees, but haven't heard any of them yet.
Edit: I looked up local news about them, and they've been seen all over the southern side of my county recently. So it's surely just a matter of time for us on the northern end. They were all over this area 17 years ago, and I'd be amazed if it didn't happen again.

Looks like your area gets Brood V, which last appeared in 2016. Due again in 2033.

(14,852 posts)... I remember seeing and hearing lots of them 17 years ago.
I edited my previous post shortly before your reply. I'll probably see and hear them very soon since they've recently emerged in big numbers on the southern side of my county. I'm on the northern end.
I live in Montgomery County OH, which is the southern-most county on that map that doesn't have black slashes in the yellow.

(5,819 posts)Ours didn't start emerging until the night temperatures got up to about 60 degrees.
This weekend the weather's been unusually chilly and miserable with highs in the 50s. The poor critters aren't moving around much. There's one that's been hanging on a window screen in front of my desk for two days.
Wishing you many happy cicadas!

(14,852 posts)They can be pests in some ways, but I admit being concerned about them after not seeing them when I expected.
Yeah, the temps have been chilly sometimes around here too.

(14,852 posts)Speak of the devil, I'm hearing them now!
Drove through a local park earlier, and they were even noisier. Lots more big trees there. Easily heard them even with the windows up and the A/C fan on high.
They're only getting started here, if the past is a good indication.
