Back when we did stuff like this. The record was distributed to schools across the country by the government, and people thought that was a good thing.

There were fitness standards promulgated by a presidential commission for each grade level.

Ten times. Every day!

An entire generation knows this song.

By sixth grade, I was already suspicious of why Richard Nixon was interested in how many push-ups I could do.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_Fat_(song)

"Chicken Fat" was the theme song for President John F. Kennedy's youth fitness program, and millions of 7-inch 33 RPM discs which were pressed for free by Capitol Records were heard in elementary, junior high school and high school gymnasiums across the United States throughout the 1960s and 1970s.

——

It was played on surplus record players that were seized from Chinese brainwashing camps during the Korean War:

I’ve never been flexible enough to touch my toes with my legs straight. Some of the gym class exercises were like medieval torture.

It's crazy. Fads diets and fad exercise are as common as ever. And some people feel the need to juice bunches of celery while others spend thousands to feel part of the latest.

Peloton added physical training regiments other than cycling. Frankly they were in perfect position for the pandemic. They caught some hell about their ads but they knew who they were marketing to.

A lot of people want others busting ass a round them and/or someone to motivate them. It’s always been the case since we sold exercise (I mean other then crazed lunatics* who just run or bike or swim on their own).

When a new one hits, I immediately look forward to the shortened version.
Also, that person yelling at you has several hundred people in the feed, so the "Relax your shoulders John" or "Stay with me" when the woman looks at her cat is unlikely to ever occur.
Unless, of course, you pay for the monthly package that costs about 10x a gym membership. Then you probably get a shout out twice a year. Their online packages start at $50 a month!
And, I wonder the same as you. Is someone on a computer screen 1,000 miles away really motivating? It seems someone willing to buy that expensive equipment & $50 or $100 a month is already damned motivated!
