My youngest granddaughter, Shell, loves all creatures great and small, and is a zookeeper while working toward a degree in veterinary science. For the time being, she still lives at home with her parents, my son and his wife,
When I said Shell loves all creatures, I meant it. Early this spring, a large orb weaver spider spun a big web across the railings at the foot of their deck stairs, blocking the way. Friends were coming for a cookout, so Shell relocated the web (with the spider still in it) by pinching the upper corners with her thumbs and forefingers and moving the web farther along the deck and sticking it there. When the guests had gone, she moved the web back, with the spider probably wondering wtf.
I guess it's no wonder I thought of Shell when I read this.
May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worms & spiderlings. Children who sense that the rose needs the thorn & run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards sun. And when they're grown & someone has to speak for those who have no voice, may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the ones. ~ Nicolette Sowder wilderchild.com
