(12,904 posts)But, the Mississippi River just around Davenport Iowa is so much prettier.
I also like the drive from St. Louis to Nashville TN.
Also, driving the Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky is wonderful. Smells like fresh grass.
And, driving north to south in Virginia around Halloween. So pretty. Find a two lane road.
Sedona, Arizona.
I could go on all day.

One of the beaches was on the top 10 U.S. beaches one time. I think it was Ocracoke. We stopped for about 1/2 hour. I wanted to brag that I visited a top 10 beach I think this is the first time I ever mentioned it. lol We are going to OBX in late summer, staying at the north end this time.
In 2012, we went to Maine and my s-i-l took us on a day trip to Acadia. It was beautiful. He is well-traveled and knows all kinds of ways to make a visit easier and stress-free. Like parking, best dates and things like that. I'm going to Maine pretty soon, to visit that s-i-l and daughter, but I don't know if we'll go to Acadia. My other daughter and her family just went to Maine as guests, and went to the coast, not sure if they are up for another trip so soon. I'll be by a lake in a forest. Beautiful!
In 2019, my other son-in-law drove me through some of the s.w. Everglades. He took me on an airboat, just the two of us with the captain. We saw a manatee while we were waiting to board. We had lunch at an iconic restaurant in Everglades City and then went searching for alligators. Saw a lot of them.
I've been to Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon 2 times, and NYC.
I forgot how lucky I've been to travel and how blessed we are to have these beautiful places in our own country. Thank for posting!

(38,414 posts)The letters OBX are short for Outer Banks which is a chain of barrier islands located off the coast of North Carolina

(16,926 posts)I didn't realize for a long time that the residents were called Bankers, and I didn't understand why financiers were so interested and vocal about local government

(9,352 posts)You get to look at New Jersey, Queens, Brooklyn, Harlem, The Bronx; go through Spuyten Duyvil and see the Pallisades on one side and Fort Tryon on the other. Going under the GW Bridge is fascinating. Its just a fun trip.
Make sure you sign for the whole circuit of Manhattan. Some of the excursions are shorter.

(9,161 posts)but having lived my entire life in Iowa, I cant see farmland as a vacation destination. Endless miles of corn (and soybeans) enlivened with the smell of large hog confinement facilities, isnt much of a draw.
There are beautiful things to see in the Midwest, such as the Loess Hills along the Missouri, but if youre seen one field of corn, youve seen em all.

(9,161 posts)several thousand gallons of pig shit. You wouldnt forget it, even though you would want to. After five or ten miles the fields would be boring.

(35,320 posts)when I went to St. louis. The river is a little wider that's all. I think Pittsburgh PA has about the nicest riverfront of any place I have seen. The only city with a front door or grand entrance, you go into a tunnel under a tree covered hill and on the other side it's Pittsburgh beautiful skyline and rivers.

(12,178 posts)Capitol Reef NP is intensely beautiful. Grand Tetons and Alaska. Yosemite should be much lower on list, too much grey. Redwoods and Sequoia much higher. Kauai, Maui, Cape Cod.
