The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWell, this was a fun day. Power went out at 11. Came back on at 3:30
Normally not a BAD length of an outage, except that we've had so much rain, I spent the day lugging 8 to 12 buckets of water up the stairs from the basement sump pump hole, to keep the basement from flooding.
Oh, the back up pump? Morte. Apparently I need a new battery.
At least I got my aerobic work out, today.
I haven't had a basement in years and I don't miss it. It was nice to have one in the days before we got AC, but we're fine with not having one any more.
4 1/2 hour power outage? No, thanks. It sounds pretty bad.
On the plus side, you will sleep well tonight. Get the Aspercreme ready.

(26,251 posts)Power went out on a Sunday morning, just before Christmas, and I couldn't get a generator until Tuesday afternoon. So I spend 2 1/2 day doing that same thing - bailing out the sump hole. Every 60 hour. Around the clock. Everybody was dealing with the outage so there was no hope of help until SOMEONE got their power back.
Finally one of my nephews came over to help. He told me my brother was bringing me a generator so I should rest and he'd take over until it arrived. He stayed for a few hours, doing what I had been doing for almost 2 days. Shortly before the generator arrived, he sat down, exhausted, looked at me and said 'I have NO idea how you have been doing this for as long as you have!' (I was 60 years old). I told him to never underestimate what you are capable of, when a crisis hits.
Strangely, I am not at all sore, this morning. I slept fairly well, but I credit the cannabis.

(26,315 posts)We just bought this place. With the big rain we had last week the water was pouring in to the sump pit like a garden hose. I would have been flooded in an hour if the power went out.
Out of an abundance of caution, I replaced the old pump as soon as we closed but didnt think I needed a back up until now. The house a couple blocks away I grew up in didnt get this much water.
I just bought a kit with a battery monitor/alarm but the pump looks kind of cheap plastic. I guess for short term it would be ok. Monitoring battery is the key I guess.
I wonder if a water powered pump would be a better fit. I didnt know such a thing existed. If you have city water you can run your pump by water pressure. It wastes a little water but no battery needed.

(63,221 posts)What a nightmare. Ugh! Flooding basements. That used to be a regular occurrance where I grew up in upstate NY when the snow melted and we had all the runoff from the hills in back. It was like a river going through our property. No stopping it, it would just flow down and run into the creek. So I kind of know what you are dealing with.
Not so bad here in Boston right now, but we are expected to get more rain over the next few days. I am not looking forward to the rest of the rainfall, but at least it will cool down, so I am looking forward to that!
