The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsPerhaps the most brilliant rotten idea I've ever had.
There are a few families in our neighborhood who set off illegal fireworks every July 4th and New Years eve. The ones on our block do so in the middle of the street leaving debris in our yards and on parked cars.
My idea came yesterday as a traffic helicopter was circling the area. I posted on our online neighborhood newsletter that the police were using air surveillance to identify those detonating illegal fireworks and would dispatch patrol cars to arrest the perpetrators.
The usual suspects were no shows last night, and our street is free of debris this morning.
Perhaps a coincidence, but I like to think not!

Years ago, while my wife and I were struggling with a fussy, sleep-proof newborn, I posted a rant about fireworks and was roundly attacked by DU's assembled fireworks lovers.
My complaint seemed a no-brainer, boiling down to "have some consideration for your neighbors," and from the response you'd think I had ordered mass sterilization of anyone who'd ever smiled at a fireworks display.
Regardless, I love your idea.

(23,078 posts)There must have been 5 places in a mile area that were lighting them up. One of them was our friends, 2 houses down. We had partied with them earlier in the afternoon/evening, but had come home to check on our dog and just stayed here in the front yard. There were fireworks right behind our house, 2 places on either side of the river road, a huge party about 2 blocks away with major fireworks - at least 2 going up at a time sometimes 3-4, the neighbors party and then about 2 blocks over was another, smaller fireworks program.
When we went for our walk this morning, there was some debris, but the vast majority was picked up off the road, sidewalks. We didn't walk by the BIG party house, our friend said it was still a disaster. All the rest were handled responsibly (it had been raining all day). I hope even that house is cleaned up today, but we will see.

(36,722 posts)Last year, the police used a drone, eye-in-the-sky, for illegal fireworks.
I wasn't out this year but probably did again.

(9,962 posts)we lived around the corner from the sheriff, and my daughter was besties with his daughter. He always had the BEST fireworks (they were legal in the county, though only quasi-legal in the city (but who's gonna bust the sheriff?) and the whole neighborhood watched.
