The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsPerhaps this story is well-known, but I'd not come across it before. The Carters are unbelievable.
Jimmy Carter's mother was a nurse, and when the next door neighbour went into labour, she went over to help. Jimmy was just 3, so she took him along, but I don't know if he had a hand in the proceedings. I doubt it.
They also helped assemble a crib and probably a bunch of other helpful favours as well. The real takeaway here is that the baby that was born was Rosalynn. She has quite literally known Jimmy her whole life.
Because of the 3-year gap in their ages, they didn't have much interaction growing up, but he really noticed her when she reached 17, and asked her out. After the date, he told his mother that he was going to marry her, no ifs ands or buts.
Think of that. They have known each other for 93 years. On Wednesday, they will have been married for 75 years. A love story for the ages, and I hope these wonderful people get another 75.

(9,808 posts)to join the Peace Corps when she was in her 80s. She was miffed that they didn't accept her application. I'm sure there are lots of DUers who remember Miss Lillian from the days when Jimmy Carter was in office.
ETA: I had an erroneous memory of Miss Lillian and after reading her biography on wikipedia, I see that she did serve as a Peace Corps volunteer to India when she was 68. But here's something about her that I didn't know:
She was the niece of Berry Gordy I, who was the paternal half-brother of James Jackson Gordy and the grandfather of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy

I'm sure this is not something that Lillian or her son Jimmy were proud of. Unfortunately for those of us with slave owning ancestors, it is a very hard fact of life.
I do not know for certain that my ancestors of the South had children with their slaves, but it is a very real possibility. I do know that there is a line of people with the same surname as one of my slave owning ancestors who trace their ancestry back parallel to my very pale white ancestors. One of them had a DNA connection to me, but when I attempted contact they did not respond. I don't blame them, but it would have been interesting to explore that connection.

(204,754 posts)In his autobiography, Jimmy Carter tells of a reunion that was organized for her - she returned to the town where she'd served and was a bit disappointed to see no one she knew - until half the town suddenly turned out to surprise her! She had been very popular there!
She also headed up the local Hubert Humphrey presidential campaign for the district in Georgia. Humphrey was one of Jimmy Carter's mentors. And when Muriel Humphrey came to speak to a local women's group, she insisted it must be integrated. That was a problem back in those days, but Miss Lillian sent her daughter Gloria inside the hotel where it was scheduled to be held ahead of time to make sure all was in order. And Mrs. Humphrey was very pleased with the turnout and her integrated female audience. What she didn't know was that after the Carters and Mrs. Humphrey left, was that many of her attentive audience returned to their jobs in the hotel.

(36,818 posts)We almost certainly played in the same park together according to our parents although the families never got to know each other. My family moved away when I was 5 and she was 3. 15 years later we reunited and have been married for a few decades ever since. Funny how serendipity works.

(36,818 posts)Makes me throw up in my mouth a little when someone mentions the "love story" of the Rayguns. They literally met because Nancy had managed to wind up on the blacklist and as the president of SAG Ronnie was the man to see about such things. It isn't hard to figure out how that quid pro quo arrangement worked. They got married solely because the scandal associated with having a child out of wedlock would have ruined both of their careers.

(204,754 posts)In his autobiography, he tells the story of going with Miss Lillian to see the new baby in the neighborhood. He says he peeked into the crib, and that was Rosalynn. And Rosalynn's Dad was also a popular neighbor there since he was a trained mechanic.
I recommend his autobiography highly ("A Full Life: Reflections at 90" ) - he talks about growing up in rural Georgia during segregation (which his nurse-mother ignored), his years at Annapolis and a promising career in the Navy until he returned to Georgia to run the family farm after his father died in 1953 (Rosalynn was not pleased!), to his first run for elective office (he took on serious local corruption), it makes for a fascinating read. I have it on audio, read by the author, and I've listened to the entire thing (I don't think he even got to his run for the presidency until disc #5!) several times and always learn something new!
