WOW: Astonishing footage of deer killing hawk to save rabbit! (Bambi saves Thumper!) (Original Post) hlthe2b Jul 2021 OP
That's sad. I guarantee there are more rabbits in the wild than hawks. Arkansas Granny Jul 2021 #1

We are quite often the prey as well--for large carnivores and other humans. Think about it. hlthe2b Jul 2021 #7

between the red-tailed hawks, great-horned owls and prairie falcons. That is when it isn't song birds or kittens.

Nice to see the little guy make it occasionally.

rabbits will scream and that may have stimulated the deer, but I didn't hear anything. more rabbits than birds of prey so not sure I would cheer the vignette, but it sure is interesting.

occasion to prevent a hawk from getting too many. (Not physically, of course). It is a typical morning sighting here. But, I've never seen a deer intervene, that is for sure.

Killing hawk? Yes. But to save the rabbit? That's a whole lot of projection

The deer had no use for the hawk, but tbd why. It could be that it confused the rabbit's cry for that of a fawn, or (my guess) it had a fawn nearby and was in "defend my territory" mode.

We had a mama moose with a newborn calf in our yard a couple weeks ago. And that charge was very reminiscent of the running I saw the mama do when another moose got too close. I suspect the deer had a fawn just off camera and was defending it.

Astonishing footage in any event!

That said, we really don't know, now, do we? We've certainly seen something like this happen with orphaned animals raised in captivity.

I admit I get triggered by anthropomorphism. For all we know the rabbit and the deer were raised together in captivity and released into the wild. Or possibly the deer was a Martian in disguise fighting off the hawk from Andromeda. Interesting video in any event!

Good for the deer!
