(8,445 posts)If I'm actually "lucky" enough to talk to a real person, I ask what card they're talking about, what vehicle they're worried about, or which house they want to buy. That's when they usually hang up.
I wish someone could tell me when my FINAL final offer to participate in their wonderful product was going to happen before they forever take me off of their list.
Oh, and I can't forget about how many iPhones have been purchased on my Amazon account and sent to China.
What's sad is that some folks do fall for these scams.

(3,600 posts)I love this guy Perogi. He has a channel with lots of videos of him scamming the scammers. This video kind of explains the main scam that is going on:
Here is his channel with lots of other videos. I particularly like the ones where he connects to the scammers computer and downloads then deletes the files. He then takes the victims list he downloaded and tries to call and warn the victims.

(3,600 posts)That article link you posted didn't say anything about my hero, and focus of my youtube link: Pierogi (Scammer Payback Youtube Channel) So please, I hope you amend your comment.
The article you posted had to do with porch pirates and the glitter bombs that this guy Mark Rober created (and I guess he has a youtube channel too).
I am trying to help people to understand what all these scammer phone calls we are all getting are about.
In the video I linked to, Pierogi did use a glitter bomb made by Mark Rober in one of the scams where the victim was supposed to send the cash. But they are not the same people.
I am just sort of bummed out that you undermined a guy who I happen to think is a hero (Pierogi/Scammer Payback)
The person who is questionable is this Mark Rober. Not Pierogi (as far as I can tell)

(3,600 posts)I think Perogi said at some point in a different video that he admired Jim Browning (anti-hacker) and he was the person that inspired Pierogi initially to do this. Jim Browning has his own channel, but I didn't find it as interesting to watch, but he too, is a hero in my book.
I don't know about you, but we get several calls a daily, and if my 79 year old mom didn't have a computer savvy daughter, it is possible they may have scammed her!
Back to your accusation, I feel it is important to not let it stand because it is not true:
I know that Pierogi teamed up with Jim Browning (who has a good reputation in cyber security) and Mark Rober (the glitter bomb guy) for the delivery part of the video I posted, but it had NOTHING to do with porch pirates (stealing peoples packages, which is what Mark Rober is all about, and what the link you posted was about. Porch Pirates. It appears he faked some deliverys. Bad on him, but leave my Pierogi out of it).
Pierogi is an anti-scammer guy who is trying to help people not get scammed on the phone or their computers by these call centers in India, and I don't think he deserves to be disparaged.
From your first link (the bad thing that was supposedly done, was done by Mark Rober on a totally different video about porch pirates):
Rober said he removed a minute and a half of the footage from the original video after learning that some of the thieves were actually acquaintances of the person he asked to help plant the packages on doorsteps. Rober said he agreed to compensate the person, who was a friend of a friend, based on the number of packages that were successfully recovered. The YouTuber later learned his helper recruited two people to collect the packages on tape. Three apparently real reactions remain in the video, Rober said.
That definitely sucks, it is misleading, and it was probably done to increase his youtube clicks. I think that is wrong.
But I do think the Glitter Bomb idea is fantastic, I know that tons of people are having their packages stolen. But again, that has nothing to do with what Pierogi is doing.

(1,160 posts)I just adored the anti-phone scammers videos he did and was heartbroken when I heard he worked with Rober. I was burned after finding out that the porch pirate stuff Rober did wasn't really true. I loved it until finding out it was faked, so now I'm suspicious of any Youtube "hero" he is associated with.
That said, I have lost many an hour watching Pierogi do his stuff on calls.

(3,600 posts)I know how you feel. It seems that we have scammers and thieves coming at us from every direction any more!
I'm bummed to hear that the glitter bomb guy had to fake people stealing stuff to boost his channel views. And it does make me suspicious too. I don't get that feeling from the Scammer Payback guy.
... and I apologize to Hunter for hijacking the thread. It was /not/ my intent at all!

(22,250 posts)they have no clue if you have credit card debt, a student loan, need an extended car warranty, need a medicare supplement, life insurance or any of the 8350 things they call about. What ever that sector is assigned to sell is what you get
I have been getting student loan calls, and I do not now nor did I ever have a student loan.
Block the calls.

You're describing the how, here. But in your op you asked why...and I answered. They don't have to know YOU, personally. They just have to sell the product. To anybody and everybody they can.

(54,256 posts)OK, now they know it's a valid number.
Whatever.
I say things like...
"Wait a minute...what's your favorite color?"
"If you could be a tree, what kind would you be?"
"Can you wait a minute, I have cookies in the oven."
Then I see how long before they hang up.
Telemarketers can be a lot of fun.

(34,135 posts)I let numbers I don't recognize ring three or more times - usually they hang up but this guy was persistent. When I picked up during the fourth ring he started on his spiel. When he paused after asking me some question - I wasn't really paying attention - I asked him "What do you want to steal from me today?"
He hung up!
