Is this weird? Seems weird to me.

EDIT: The package owner just called and said his son was coming to get the package, but now its gone! The son is out of town, so he didn't take it. It was well-hidden on my front porch and could not be seen from the street. If USPS didin't take it, it has been stolen. Oh well, not my problem.

Yesterday USPS dropped a package on my front patio.

The label on it was for an address a block away, with a recipient name of a person I don't know.

I printed a nice note, telling the intended recipient what happened, and added my address and phone number to it. I walked (well, hobbled) to his house and knocked on the door, prepared to leave the note in his mail box if he wasn't home.

I would have put the package into my car and dropped it off at his house, but I have really bad back problems and it's a little too heavy and awkward for me to comfortably lift.

He answered the door, I told him about his package, and I gave him the note. He thanked me and I hobbled home.

More than 24 hours later, the box is still on my front patio. Is it weird that he hasn't picked it up yet?

If I was healthy, I could easily lift the box and put it in a car. There was a truck parked in his driveway that I assume is his.

I have potted plants on the front patio and I have to water them with a hose. I can't get to them without wetting his package. A colony of feral cats live on my property and they will spray anything they feel doesn't belong. I'm worried they're gonna' piss on his package.

What do I do?

2. A couple of ideas....

You could put a big note on the box for the USPS and ask that it be delivered to the right person. You could also wait for and intercept your mail carrier to do the same. It's not your responsibility to hobble around the neighborhood doing your mail carrier's job for them.

4. I was trying to be nice. I know how much it sucks these days to wait for a USPS package.

My mail carrier knows I don't send mail out from my house and I don't receive mail every day. It would be hard for me to catch him.

And I live in New Orleans. It's crazy hot and humid outside. Feels like a jungle. Ten minutes out there and I'm drenched in sweat.

You let the intended recipient know where the box was and it's now up to him to come get it. If you want to be really nice, you could put it in a plastic bag to protect it from the feral cats, rain, etc, and tape a sign with his name to it. Beyond that, you've done more than any reasonable person could be expected to do. The rest is up to him.

6. Just to be a bit paranoid - worry about what might be in that package and why the recipient

may not want to come and retrieve it.

There are apparently a lot of intentionally misdirected packages containing drugs (or whatever) that are intended to be picked up surreptitiously later to avoid tracing.

Kidding, of course.

It has stickers on it stating 'computer desk' and it's the shape of a desk top.

Anyway, it's gone now. The recipient finally called, but now the pakcage is gone. I hope USPS came to get it. Otherwise someone stole it.
