Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsCan we stop using the phrase "I mean" in every other sentence we speak?
I mean, are we using it as a filler, or to appear to be sincere? (see what I mean?)

(3,639 posts)Not to be mean, but I do not know what you mean.
Do we have a statistical problem with "mean"? Perhaps the mode or the medium has to be considered in the meantime?
Or do we mean to meander the mean-streets without meaningful motives.

(34,120 posts)That's what I always think as they say it.
I think both phrases (and other filler phrases) are there to provide space for the speaker to think. I would prefer that they pause before their answer so they can give it without those verbal hiccups.

(10,005 posts)My sister says "anyway...".
Heard a guest on a public radio entertainment show this morning say "like" every third word.
I get distracted by their filler phrases and miss what they're attempting to say.

(34,120 posts)About using "you know" while talking. She was brilliant, did public speaking, and was trying to teach me to be more effective in communication. It worked - I don't often use filler phrases and it annoys me to hear people doing it in the media.

(63,769 posts)of all those men in the Parliament. I loved that movie. Ever since I saw it, I always envision Meryl Streep in that poufy wig responding to the sexist manner in which she is addressed when I think of Thatcher and I have to stop and reroute my memory to the real Thatcher. No wonder Streep got an Oscar for that movie...

(2,769 posts)Every single guest on an MSNBC show says "Thank YOU" when thanked by the host for appearing on the show.
Rachel: Thanks for being here. Guest: Thank YOU.
Chris: Thanks for being here. Guest: Thank YOU.
I'll faint when one of the guests says "You're welcome".
