(27,823 posts)Something about the shape of the head/ears just has a 'Chow' like look, but not so much the muzzle. Which is why I wonder if it's a mix.

(21,120 posts)They have coats like Shiba Inu a, but they are solid red. The Shiba Inu usually has a white or cream chest and belly.

They're pretty rare and are generally just found in Japan.

(21,120 posts)It is an ancient dog breed. They have naturally short tails and short dense fur. They come in red, like this one, as well as black, black and white and brindle.

(68,341 posts)naturally very short:

Maybe it's a mix with that breed.

(21,120 posts)Some Corgis are born with naturally short tails, but most are docked unless docking has been outlawed.

The Five Red Dog is not made out of thin air. It is different from other Chinese pastoral dogs. As the name suggests, this kind of dog has an iconic characteristic: wherever there is meat, it is red.
Five red dogs, originated in Chaoshan and known in Dongguan, belong to the unique local dog breeds in Guangdong and are classified as Chinese pastoral dogs.

(33,511 posts)than what I was able to get to post here. This bloodline seems to be based on poorly-bred indigenous Chow-Chows and then further degraded by breeding recessives to recessives. The breeding scheme seems based more on some superstitious ideals rather than health.
