So, how does Darkness Falls end?

I was looking at the movie for free through Prime Video and something weird happened. First of all, I wasn't really into it, pausing and starting the movie at least half a dozen times as I worked in and out of the kitchen. But, when I finally had time to see the ending, it's now only available if I rent it. What changed?

Anyway, I got on the net to find my answer and I never got past the negative reviews. Apparently, it got panned because the main character's slow degradation into madness was not done well. I must have missed the nuances because I had so many starts and stops I wasn't really paying attention.

So, cutting to the chase, did he kill the father and son serial killers or did they outsmart him?
