Back in the olden times (okay, Boomer), record companies would put out promotional records to showcase artists on their label. Warner Bros. issued several of these, and the one I bought (if memory serves, from a coupon in National Lampoon magazine) retailed for two bucks. It was a double album, and had "This Old Cowboy" along with a whole bunch of other artists and offerings of varying quality. I never became a fan of the Marshall Tucker Band, but this song takes me straight back to 1974 or so, and it's not a bad trip.
