(1,786 posts)We went around the lake, starting at the 50-89 junction, then to Emerald Bay, thru the west side to Kings Beach to eat lunch, then around the East side and ending our lake tour at South Lake Tahoe. When I want to bypass the main street, Lake Tahoe Blvd I usually take the Pioneer Trail turnoff after crossing the Stateline border back into California and go back to Hy 50 that way. It isn't as scenic but is quicker for those of us going to Sacramento.
Near the Al Tahoe Blvd area, I saw a brown bear crossing the road. He actually waited until the 3-4 cars went by and then ran across Pioneer Trail. I'm glad he didn't get hurt but that is awfully close to residential area's for a bear to be roaming.
It was cool to watch though. I love that area and try to make a trip around the lake 5-6 times every year.

(13,355 posts)Im not laughing AT you...but it *is* something of an adjustment for people when they see them just mozying down the road.
I've had enough moments with them to now be like "meh"
Our resident Big Boi I named him "Junior" he was a lone juvenile last year...the year before I had seen him and momma...
last summer he was very naughty! Got into the vacation rental's car for some gum, no damage but they peed themselves lol then he walked aling the top of the fence like a freaking CAT and ended up scaring my new neighbor on the other side... he poked his head over my back fence and they were practically nose to nose! she yelped, he lumbered over the back of my fence and meandered through the yards into the forest...
Then I caught him trying to rip open the screen on the back neighbor's kitchen (dummies...they left food in the sink and the window open...) I ran out the back door and yelled at him over the fence and clapped my hands... mostly when I see him I just reprimand him like a bad labrador! "Junior! Go Home...bad bear!"
he looks at me like "aw mom, you caught me"...and then lumbers away...
This summer he's more subdued, only seen him a couple times so far, but he's grown at least another 75 lbs...

(13,355 posts)I try to give my critters and birds a little oasis...
they know when the sun moves I turn on the sprinkler for a bit and put out seed... sometimes even little berries. I feel so bad for them, even the coyote has stopped by a few evenings to drink.
Been here 30 years, and the last 5 have been progressively hotter and drier
The "good" news is that the squirrels are dropping the pine cones earlier than usual, that often means an early and deep snow winter...

(13,355 posts)even the occasional T-storm is more lightning than rain (but we've only had 2 in months)...just NO moisture, no clouds at all...
Current Tamarack Fire near MArkleeville is growing fast, they are trying to use the tankers while they can. over 6000 acres overnight, they think it was caused by a lightning strike 2 weeks ago and smoldered till it finally blew up yesterday...
