(28,493 posts)School starts August 16 where I am, and earlier in lots of other places.
Starting after Labor Day is unusual any more.
added on edit: A lot of places have some kind of different schedule this year because of disruptions last year.

(2,636 posts)My sisters-in-law teach in WV. Kids back 8/16, teachers the week before.
In Western NC, teachers back 8/16, and kids 8/23.
Growing up in So Cal, I started school each year day after Labor Day and went through mid June. Not till college did school start in August. Every single year I taught (1998-2018), in Bay Area and WNC, kids started mid to late August, two weeks before Labor Day.
YMMV

I myself dont remember ever going back before Labor Day.
Hubby and I were in Walmart this morning and I commented on how they had all the school supplies right inside the front door.

(29,885 posts)would be wise to check out the sales as soon as possible, considering supply chain disruptions and the possibility of spot shortages. Needless to say, this is not a normal year.
