“IPAs are so hot right now!” That sentence is so 1996. And 2019. And probably 2030, if we make it that far. As long as craft beer has been a thing, IPAs have dominated, bringing drinkers in flocks to their favourite beer bars, turning naysayers into beer snobs, and sending rabid collectors across state lines. That makes picking the best IPAs quite a task, especially in the summer: The best at any given time can be mainstays, one-offs, and everything in between. To keep our bead on this ever-moving target, we’ve assembled beer experts to name what they deem to be the most attention-worthy IPAs at this very moment. We will revisit the list in the months to come to add new beers and subtract the ones lost to time, so that you always have your finger on the proverbial IPA pulse. Raise a glass. It’s a good time to be an IPA lover. It always is.

Systembolaget (our state owned liquor monopoly) doesn't carry it.

I have some sites here I use, like

https://www.beergium.com/ (about 1000 different beers and 300 breweries, they specialise in Belgian, Scandinavian, and American craft breweries)

but none of the have that brand.

Ebay and hope is probably it, and I generally do not trust it for beer.

and near it, so it all balances out.

Beergium is great, as their prices are fair, we pay no duty (EU and all that) and they are one of the few places where you can regularly find one of the old school holy grail breweries, Westvleteren (The Belgium Trappiste monastery), that you normally have to go to i person to buy their ales. They also do not price gouge with it (unlike 90% of outlets who get it).

They usually have the granddaddy of the all, Westvleteren 12 (XII)

Notes: The heaviest of the Westvleteren beers, the 12 is a quadrupel style beer, which can be recognized by its yellow cap. Like the other Westvleteren beers, the bottle does not have a label, and the cap therefore has all the required information.

The Westvleteren 12 has always been rated high on beer reviews, and is by some considered to be the best beer in the world.

Just as the other Westvleteren beers, it can only legally be purchased at the monastery (on appointment) or in the bar across the street. However, it often finds its way on the grey market where it's sold at high prices.

Made from an ancient Egyptian beer recipe found in king Tutankamun's tomb.

That beer is delicious.
Don't know if you can buy it anymore.

I know, bad joke, and I did get used to room temperature lager and bitter over there.

Ballantine's was all there was when I was young, and I bought it for preference. Had no idea what the background was, I just liked the bite.

I do not, as a general rule of thumb, like blends. That said, one of the single malts that goes into the better Ballantine's blends is from a little-known Speyside distillery called Glenburgie.

Ballantine's bottles in as single malt and the 18 year old iteration is one of the best values out there. Only 699Kr (around 80 usd) here at Systembolaget (our state liquor monopoly). That is a steal for an 18yo single malt. Only thing is I wish the ABV was tad bit higher, as its 40%, and it could use a wee boost to maybe 43-45% or so to further bring some structure to the elements.

I can't find quick a picture of the old bottles, but here's the label.



The bottles were a green glass, the usual shape. It was an India Pale, and about the only such thing around, at least here, when I was young. I gather the Pabst people have revived it, but I doubt it's the same. Pabst was poor stuff back then.

Not much for Scotch, myself. I like Irish, but after a while noticed it made me quick to quarrel, and gave it up.

...but I absolutely cannot stand to drink IPA. They all taste like someone who can't make beer made them.

Give me a good pilsner any day. Of course, you'll very rarely see a craft pilsner because the equipment to make one is hella expensive - for one thing, you have to ferment it twice and both of them have to be done in the cold. (The people who invented pilsner beer did it in caves.)

This one is a bit hard to find, but Czechvar is an exceptional pilsner. This beer is also the subject of a major trademark dispute: It is made in the town of Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic, and has been for centuries. In most of the world, this product has the brand "Budweiser Budvar" on its label. As you may know, an American brewery decided to make a beer similar (though much, much less tasty - the stuff made in the CR has no rice in it, which the US-made brew does) to Budweiser Budvar, and they call theirs Budweiser. The two breweries sat down and carved up the world into territories; any country that sold Czech Budweiser wouldn't sell American Budweiser and vice versa. This worked well until InBev bought Anheuser-Busch and decided to sell their Budweiser worldwide. Back to the bargaining table. Now, in the nations that originally sold American Budweiser the Czech product is called "Czechvar" and in the nations that sold Czech Budweiser the American product is called "Bud." St. Pauli Girl is another favorite. Heineken is excellent if it's canned - the green bottles they use let the beer inside get skunky.

For American-made beers, I do truly love Samuel Adams and...believe it or not, DRAFT Budweiser. It's got to be draft. Packaged Budweiser's problem is 100 percent how people handle it before it gets to you. You know the stuff is extremely light in color. Well...the lighter in color beer is, the more delicate it is. You walk into a store and there's this huge wall of Bud 12-packs sitting there out of the refrigerator. Guess what kids: Budweiser must be handled like milk if you don't want it to spoil, and stacking it up into the shape of an American flag before Flag Day and leaving it that way until Labor Day is a sure way to fuck it up. Draft beer is handled cold its entire life. Go to a bar. Order a draft Bud. You won't believe it's the same beer.
