The kids are alright

We have a new guy at work. He’s 16, almost 17, and a hard worker.

He’s been enjoying and joining in with all the joking and raucousness of us other 3 idiots in the kitchen (we have toned it down a bit because of his age).

We are always making stupid, small bets on trivial things. A couple months ago, we decided to follow a sport none of us know much about. Why not?

Well... not really follow, more like “we each get 10 minutes of research and then choose a fighter to win this upcoming tournament.” The ONE womens atomweight tournament. It’s a MMA kind of thing with 115 lb. women who could kick the crap out of all of us at the same time.

The tournament has been postponed for several weeks and the trash talking in the kitchen has been fierce (and ridiculous).

Anyhooo, the new tournament start date was just announced! September 3rd. Let’s get it on!

We let the kid pick a fighter today, and then discussion turned to how, exactly, we are going to lay money on this thing. Do we need brackets? My fighter faces my sous chef’s fighter in one of the first bouts, so one of us will be out right away. We went to the whiteboard (which our boss never should have given us, lol!) and started making a stupidly, overly complicated chart, as is our way.

Then the kid says, “Well, we could donate the money to a charity. Everyone put the same amount of money in a pot?”

YES!

I am ashamed we “adults” didn’t think of that, but impressed with him.

So, however the tournament turns out, we are donating the pot (and extra) to the local women’s shelter.

What a great kid. If you get a chance to let his parents know what a wonderful person they raised, please do so.
