(54,268 posts)She comes from the flat farm country of northwestern Germany, and knew personally several people who were killed by lightning strikes. Lightning storms terrify her, and she will not go out in one under any circumstances.

(23,059 posts)For 1-1/2 hrs. it looked like a tornado was forming and lightening was hitting frequently and so close we could see the explosions in 3 cases. It was scary! So glad when those dark clouds started to disappate and stopped swirling, I just can't express my relief. It was way way too close for comfort!

(118,462 posts)family rented the neighbour's cottage when I was 3 or 4. My mom loved thunder and lightening storms. She'd open the doors to our house whenever there was a storm. That's what growing up on a farm teaches: love of rain. The more the better. And if it comes with bells and whistles, that is even better.

(63,221 posts)There is something about being all safe and warm in your home, while the weather is just furious outside. i can't really explain it, but it just feels very comforting to me. I think the Germans or some other ethnic group might even have a specific word for it.
