I had a little black-and-white visitor last night

Someone in my neighborhood has a little tuxedo cat - female, hopefully spayed, about six pounds - that they allow to run free. I know it isn't a stray because it looks well-fed. The first time this kitty made it to my house was the day my patio door was installed. (I was joking with the installers about free cats coming with every Andersen patio door.)

I got off work at midnight. When I'm home and awake, I always open the patio door for ventilation.

Anyway...at 1 am this cat just strolled into my house, walked into my computer room, and started begging for attention.

I was friendly to a tuxedo cat who looked well-fed and was so friendly I assumed he belonged to someone. Alas, by the time I figured out no one knew where he came from, he had pretty much moved in.....it has been two years now.

9. I had a visitor late one night

and was unaware of it since I was at my computer and my back was facing the door, which I also leave open for ventilation. My 7 lb Chihuahua was sound asleep on the sofa, unable to even see the door from her spot. Before I knew it I heard a commotion as my dog had somehow smelled the intruder and chased it out of the house so fast that by the time I turned around all I saw was my dog chasing a whitish animal out the door and it was bigger than she was. It turned out to be an adult opossum. She was able to smell it while asleep. I was very impressed. My furbaby was small but she was all dog. A skunk sprayed my other dog years ago and I am glad he never ventured inside.

12. We have a pet door we cover at night

Otherwise opossums will just mosey in, looking for food.

13. I fed 3 baby opossum orphans for a few weeks

and they would come and eat while I sat on the step with my dog on my lap watching them, they were so cute and about the size of a small rat. My dog was so well behaved that she sat there watching them with me. Once I got too close to a teenage opossum and it must have bad 1,000 sharp teeth in its mouth...scared me to death.

14. They do have a lot of teeth

I guess because they are omnivores. I've never known anyone who was bitten by one though. Nevertheless, they don't carry rabies. Their body temperature is too low.

16. Actually they are our garden friends.

They eat bugs, slugs and snails and fruits that have fallen. Too bad they are always found on the road dead.

My experimental cauliflower and broccoli plot is being decimated by snails.

We have visitor ducks, about 5 of them, land in the pool and beg for seeds, but never venture far from the water to look for snails.

As for cats - yep, they wander in and adopt you as their 24/7 on demand feeder servant.
We have one of those here, kills the occasional rat, so I guess he can stay. Not that we have any say in that.

20. There was a maine coon that lived across the lane in my old apartment complex.

I had a big male named Monster and he would just watch when the maine coon walked into my apartment and would play with Monster's toys. Monster knew a weight difference when he saw one. No growling. No hissing.
