The last one is en route to Mexico. Not sure about the first.
This is increasingly a rare event unless we act to save them. Plant milkweed and knock off the pesticides.

(26,507 posts)so far this summer I've only counted seeing 5 Monarchs in our yards.
I live in a suburb of Chicago.
Last year they were very plentiful. This year not so much.

(133 posts)My wife and I live in the Bay Area and we planted Milkweed 4 years ago. Last year we fostered 12 caterpillars to cocoon stage and successful release. This year we've already helped 21 and we have another 13 right now in cocoons that will take flight in another week and a half. It's pretty cool and really, their just like kids... they eat a lot, make a real mess for you to clean up and then leave! but that's not all... then their kids come home expecting the same! Oh my!

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
