Wine Talk: Jimmy Carter

WS: Winemaking is a bit of family tradition, isn't it?

JC: My grandfather made wine on a very large scale. He had about 15 acres of grapes [in Georgia], and he made all of that into wine--which is a lot of wine. Then, my father and my uncle both inherited my grandfather's recipe, and I inherited the big 5-gallon jugs from my daddy. I've been making wine now for 15 years. About every five years or so I make around 100 bottles of wine, just to give to my family and friends and lately to donate to the Carter Center. This past time when I made wine, I made 75 bottles or so of red wine and about 25 bottles of white wine.

I generally get my children and grandchildren to come down to Plains, usually in August, and we go out into the local vineyards and pick around 50 gallons of grapes. I've got an ancient wine press--probably about 250 years old--that someone gave to me, and I've made the rest of my equipment myself.

WS: What kind of grapes do you use?

JC: I just use local Scuppernong grapes and Muscadine grapes. I never have had regular vintners' grapes.

If I had enough money I would make a significant donation to them yearly but I don't. I wish there was a way, just once, to be able to send money to the Carter Center and ask if I could spend just one day or even 1/2 day picking grapes for him. A nice, small bottle of wine to keep as a treasure and memories of one of the most incredible human beings on the planet. Ahhhh, dreams. If I had that much money I would try to pay off more of my house so......dreams. Whatta guy, huh? His heart must be huge.

10. Wow, some people are so touchy and humorless

People are always joking about Carter and peanuts, so I assumed that was the point.

But it wouldn't have surprised me. I recently found out that there is vodka distilled from milk, so I don't automatically rule out anything. Considering the other fruits and things people make wine and mead from, peanut wine doesn't seem that weird and I'd probably try it.

These wines are probably quite sweet. I am not a fan of sweet wine, however the juice might make a really nice port. I will ask my winemaking friend.

20. I think you need some kind of juice to start with; peanuts aren't juicy.

They are oily but I don't think oil ferments like juice does. There might be a way to make peanut-flavored wine, but ick.
