I was five miles from the epicenter during the Northridge Quake in '94. It was a 6.7 and was horrifying. We had major damage, and I had PTSD for at least a year. Since that time, I've had my "earthquake bag" packed and by my bed everywhere I've lived through out Southern California.

(22,616 posts)I would literally have absolutely no idea how to prepare for one.
I experienced one VERY mild quake back in the 80s. Once in a blue moon, the New Madrid fault down in Missouri shakes its bootie hard enough that we can feel it in parts of Illinois. We were living a lot farther south at the time than we are now, so we were close enough to feel some minor tremors. By the time we figured out what was happening, It was over.
There was one in the early 70s, when I was in college, but I slept through that one.

(8,103 posts)I had been in a car accident on the night of the Northridge Earthquake. My stepfather who lived in Westchester came and picked me up. So, I was sleeping in his living room that night. He had two enormous speakers in there. The last thing he said to me was, if an earthquake hits, those will fall on you.
Well, that damned earthquake hit, and I jumped up and ran to the doorway, then just stood there while I watched the upright piano shimmy across the room. The speakers never moved. I am so glad I didn't have them fall over on me. That earthquake was one of the scariest things to ever happen to me. There was one other earthquake that was very bad, but I don't remember what they called it. But, earthquakes, yeah...
