4. That is a nice drive.

Done it a few times myself. We used to go to Reno several times a year. We always made a day side trip to Virginia City. Kind of fun to walk around there. Lots of history.

7. Nice! I love that spot going south on 89 just past Emerald Bay where the road "disappears."

The road is on top of a ridge, all you see in front of you is water (the lake), & it looks like the road is disappearing into thin air. It was always a rush to hit that point while driving.

It was featured in the movie, City of Angels, at the end.

While primarily set in Los Angeles, this romantic fantasy is about an angel (Nicolas Cage) who falls in love with a woman (Meg Ryan) and wishes to become human in order to be with her. This 90’s gem has Meg Ryan’s character retreat to her uncle’s home - the same house as in the Bodyguard. The dramatic final scene of Meg Ryan riding her bicycle to the store and back was shot on Highway 89 near Emerald Bay.

Emerald Bay (I once read that it was one of the most photographed spots on earth.) Always took my visitors there.

10. I love that drive !!! I've made it several times.

I have a pal from here in Chicago who lives up in King's Beach. I get out there every 2-3 years. For me, it's paradise.

12. I lost my chance to do that about 10 years ago

I was in the Sacramento area and we planned to drive across the pass to Tahoe because my wife has been there several times and wanted me to see it, but the pass was closed by a freak snowstorm. We ended up knocking about Gold Rush country for a few days before heading to our next reservation in Yosemite instead. That was interesting too, we did several cave and mine tours and the scenery was nice in its own way. But I still haven't seen Tahoe.

The wilderness between Kirkwood/Caples Lake and 50 is just impassable, the hot spots are torching out 3/4 mile and they cant directly access it

winds made the flares smoke more so they couldnt get air support in at ALL today...
The press Release was an hour ago and tells us to still stay vigilant and know this isnt over yet.


Im glad you got to see some of the beauty, but it's hard cuz right now I *really* wish people would stay away

17. Don't Forget The Forest just North of Emerald Bay

Last Week I hiked from the Tahoma area south to the DL Bliss and Emerald Bay State Parks area. In fact, about a quarter mile past the sign. I wondered how far it was from there to Emerald Bay itself. I wanted to go further south but had to turn back and hike post-haste back to Sugar Pine Point state park to catch the last bus that would get me back to Truckee. The North Lake Tahoe buses, btw, are completely free. Anyway, a gorgeous walk all the way. I sat on the highway curb at one point in Rubicon Bay and listened to hispanic construction workers talking and playing some sort of hi-tech chill music when a black bear popped up on the curb just a few yards away. This in the middle of the day. We saw one another at exactly the same time. The bear suddenly froze, and I gave a surprised-sounding ‘Hey!’ It immediately took off across the road and up the slope into the group of houses there, not into the deep forest. I trudged on. Just into the parks area, I saw some of the most beautiful and interesting old growth forest I had ever seen.. What fascinated me was the thought how the forest set off the amazingly high and steep ridges there rather than vice versa. Most forest is so uniformly spaced. Not there. Beautiful and interesting everywhere as if a super-hot summer had never happened.
