I had the strangest visit to Chipotle this last week. I know the restaurant has had trouble with food problems over the years, but maybe once a month or two, I take my chances. So, I rolled the dice this week and experienced the sign of the changing times.
I walked in and though there were only six customers, or couples in line, the line reached out to the door because of the six foot distance rule. I was the last person in line and made it to the corner of the room in that position, when suddenly someone bumped me from behind. How odd. I haven't had an accidental "bump" in at least a couple of years. I turned around to see a late twenty man, with what appeared to be two or three children and a wife. All unmasked. How odd that he would walk in, in this day and age, and not manage to keep, at least, a normal distance from a person. I wondered if there was going to be more altercations.
For the most part, the family was oblivious to everyone else in the restaurant. The kids ran around looking for a table and settled in the corner booth, where they could be near to the parents. Their conversation was loud, as if they were in their own living room. Maybe this man was expecting approving looks of adoration for his young ones, as we once did at one time, but everyone just gave him their backs.
My strategy was a simple one. Make it to the serving area and make my order fast, because that alone would put distance between us.
And when I got there, my beef with Chipotle began. The meat serving size from this particular restaurant is meager compared to other restaurants. The Chipotle at the Sanford Mall is immense. A huge heaping spoon, and some extra bits to round out the surface of the bowl. But this local Chipotle's serving is barely over a level spoon. And if something falls off the spoon, they don't go back to retrieve the wayward portion.
I just shrugged. Hubby and I are trying to lose weight, so I just go along with it.
But then, shit really happened.
There were two women at the end of the line. One was the server that provides the toppings, and the other the cash register. The server seemed cross or confused. Kept asking me what I had ordered and didn't seem to want to accept what I kept saying. At one point she asked, "A double?" For what I presumed meant a double serving of meat. I said no and again told her what my meat choices were. And then her attention was no longer on me.
She was looking at the guy serving the meat. I told this woman what I wanted for toppings, but it was obvious she wasn't listening. She was acting like I wasn't making my choices clear to her, at the same time that she kept darting to watch what the meat server was doing. And she mumbled something. I realized that her comments were directed to the woman at the register and not at all listening to what I was saying, when she began to pour on the cheese on my bowl. I yelled out, "NO! NO cheese! I asked to load on the lettuce!" I was shocked, because cheese and sour cream are the two things that can put on some serious calories at these kind of places.
I think my excitement woke her up. She finished my order and the cash register explained, "These servings seem heavy handed."
Finally, I had enough. "No. It was one scoop, like this, (I used my hand to demonstrate) and it was not heavy-handed. There are other Chipotles that are very generous with their portions, but you provide the least portions."
The register looked at me coldly and said, "Have a nice day."
Well. Sure wish there was another branch closer to us.
