Wolves certainly will try hard to avoid you, but not if a dog confronts them.

Its presence is the thing. Almost any canid can trigger the protection response which is attack. You can be injured trying to protect your dog. Dogs in the back country aren't a very good idea for that reason. They will also attract bears.

that incite wolves, coyotes, bear the most (and on one of those scores, I've had the "pleasure" of experience).

But as one who has had decades of backcountry hiking and backpacking with those who trained me well, dogs should only be taken if exceedingly well trained to your commands, wearing LOUD bear bells (saved me once) and in at least a small group of people--all armed with bear spray. And yes, being able to pull them back on at least a long hunting line as a leash can save the day.
