(25,848 posts)Cats are amazing. I wish I were a good enough writer to write the novel in which cats have evolved, survived humans, and are now the intelligent species on this planet.
Okay, a parallel book would have dogs as that surviving species. Either one would be fascinating, in the hands of a good writer.

(4,858 posts)...it's a haunting book, and something of a tear-jerker.

(25,848 posts)but I read it many years ago. Perhaps I should try to read it again. I do remember how it valued and appreciated dogs. I honestly remember almost nothing, other than I loved that book all those years ago.
While I am myself a cat person, I know lots of people with dogs, and fully appreciate canines.

The intelligent canines are the bad guys. Lots of fun and adventure.
And yes, that is a human mixed in with the crew.

"Cordwainer Smith" definitely had a thing for cats, and the cat-derived underpeople played important roles in his stories -- particularly the girlygirl C'Mell in the Norstrilia stories. There is one story in which a race of space-faring, human-loyal cat descendants is created, effectively instantaneously, but they are only briefly described.
Googling "cats science fiction" yields an embarrassment of riches !

Quite effective at control, these feline overloads.
