(17,459 posts)actually did answer it (usually don't if it is not a 'name' I know).
Identified themselves as some 'police' group and asked for a donation.
Told them I'd donate if they would do something about shooting unarmed black men.

(7,215 posts)Soon as they identify themselves, I hang up. They usually ask for Mr. ..., I say, "this is" and after they identify themselves I hang up.
By the way I am the Mrs.

(34,189 posts)I never confirm who they have reached until they have identified themselves first and they are someone I want to talk to.
Usually the police "benevolent" groups start in on their spiels. I cut in and tell them, I will NOT donate to them, ask them to take my number off their list, and tell them to never call me again. I have not kept a list of these spam callers but I suspect the same groups have called me numerous times over the years.
Had a different scam caller address me as Mr. whatever and "Sir" - my number is listed firstinitial lastname in the one book so I get calls from all kinds of entities asking for Mr. lastname. I tell them there is no Mr. lastname at this number and never has been. I do NOT tell them that I am Ms lastname.

(15,719 posts)They go on talking about this helps Officers widows and children etc and I just keep repeating my first statement... After a while they get it and hang up. I believe I'm now on THEIR do not call list.. YMMV...

(6,467 posts)They used to call me about three times a day and I always told them the same thing. "Stop shooting black people".

(15,719 posts)is that the people who are calling you are NOT police officers.. They are a company that does it for the FOP and take a cut of the proceeds... fuckers...

(45,806 posts)I then tell them ""I'm sorry, I don't donate over the phone." Then I end the call. I try to be polite just in case they really are police. Making calls like that is a horrible job, & I feel sorry for them. If they aren't cops, they got lucky not getting yelled at this time,
MyOwnPeace
(17,459 posts)they are usually some "fund-raising" organization hired to work on behalf of the 'source.'
That means: they're not the cops doing off-duty soliciting, just a telemarketing company working to raise some funds for a customer.

(5,826 posts)was always calling asking me to subscribe, came home on a Fri night after work and a couple of drinks, a lady calls and I had had enough. She asked me to subscribe and I said, "it depends, what are you wearing"? Complete silence and then a hang up....they never called again...
