She cowered at the back of the shelter kennel, but my daughter saw something special in her. When another family was getting interested in adoption, I told her to go get the dog without me ever meeting her.

It was a great decision. She has been a wonderful dog, and she is no longer afraid of me (I think a man abused her). We have had 13 wonderful years with her so far.

..abandoned her in the house after they took what they wanted. The dog bit everyone but mom ANYWAY so for him to be abandoned..( by mom when she died) an then left alone for 24 hours made him even more neurotic. Took a long time but he no longer bites me....hubby still cant pet him (after 2 years) and he still runs an hides from me if I raise my voice.

It is hard and sometimes even patience does not make things ideal. I rescued a dog off the road that had been beaten and dumped in the winter in an icy ditch on my road. He was a Belgian Shepard so not small. I was the only person he would sort of trust for a while then my sons. He would protect them constantly. He and my husband made peace but it took a while and they never really liked each other much.

It is so hard, this story was just wonderful but sometimes it does not work quite that well. Still, if you can rescue and make the situation tolerable that is still better than where they were. They all deserve a chance. Thank you for your story. It, and the lovely video, have made my day.

because the adopter said she was "hiding", also she "ruined a $3000 carpet". Methinks he wanted a decor object, not a cat. She is a sweet kitty who came in with her mom and sister when their owner died. Mom was FIV+ so went to Charlottesville because at the time we were not adopting out FIV+ cats (we start a week from Monday, yay!) and sister was adopted. This lovely lady is now languishing in Adoptables waiting for a new home where someone will appreciate her properly.

She'd been found as a kitten hiding in a car wheel well, so she was a feral. Someone adopted her and returned her without having the courage to face the adoption people. They just dumped her off inside a box with no explanation.

I adopted her a little over a year ago and put her in the master bedroom so our other adoptee could get used to her smell. For the first three weeks we saw nothing of her - she hid under the bed. We knew she was eating, drinking, and pooping since food and water disappeared and the litter box was used.

Gradually she got used to us and our other two cats (one had escaped and it was five weeks before he returned). She's still spooky - if we get loud, she hides, if we move fast around her, she hides. She is more shy of my husband but loves his scratching - he's an expert at cat scratches. I am pretty certain that a man abused her from her reactions.

She will never be a relaxed lap cat. I have taken her into my lap once but it was clear she was not comfortable so I don't push it. But she has a home where she can be herself and be relaxed and not worry.

In fact all three cats are shy - when the doorbell rings they all dash for hiding places and only one of them comes out where there are visitors. It's a good thing we don't have company very often or we'd never see them.

my mum adopted a cat from Petsmart that had been returned twice....he'd been with her about a week when she walked away from him and he ran up and bit her on the ankle, HARD.....she picked him up, put him nose to nose with her, looked directly in his eyes and said YOU WILL NOT DO THAT AGAIN! IF YOU DO, I WILL KNOCK YOUR BLOODY HEAD OFF! (she was a Brit)....he never did do that again, and became a wonderful pet.......he eventually outlived mum and my brother took care of him until he passed

here he is giving her the STARE, trying to get her attention
