A new sweet potato dish was introduced a few years back - mashed sweet potatoes with a brown sugar/pecan topping. Tastes better than the marshmallow thing, but still too sweet for a side dish and more of a dessert.

with either chick peas or black beans. Add fresh spinach at the end and let it wilt. I have 2 favorite versions: one has curry powder and the other has Jamaican Jerk spices.

Delish over coconut rice. Substitute light coconut milk for the water.

Excellent to have on the table for the vegetarians

The Jamaican version started out as a beef stew recipe I found on Pinterest. Just deleted the beef

Thu Nov 25, 2021, 04:25 AM
Nov 2021

I am not a fan of sweet potatoes- what turned me off were these sugar laden additions to a rather sweet starchy veggie. I run away from candied, marshmallow, brown/white sugary additions. I would rather starve than eat them!

It was when I discovered savory recipes for sweet potatoes was when I could tolerate eating them.

If someone can explain the additional sugar, I’d appreciate it!

Her Persian inlaws love it; also her mac & cheese which she also makes with a very rich cream sauce and 3 kinds of cheese. She made it for the first Christmas dinner with the family and now she is the Official Purveyor of Mac and Cheese.

Poor kid is lactose and gluten intolerant so she can't eat it but she does love to make it.

Fortunately it freezes well and you can make muffins, pie or a wonderful Jello dish (there is such a thing) using orange jello as the base. (whipped cream or cream cheese of course.)

And pie for dessert, but not pumpkin preferably.

And although I generally like cranberries in a number of formats, the canned 'jelly' style is NOT something I want anything to do with. OTOH, if someone makes a nice homemade cranberry sauce, I'm down w/that.

I guess there's nothing I LOATHE (though sweet potato marshmallow casserole is not something I'd choose to eat), but I'm not really that excited about thxgiving food generally.

My favorite part is making turkey soup, and turkey sandwiches ... later.

Also generally I like to make my own turkey, on my barbeque. And I cook it to 158F or so, and pull it off, and it heats to around 161-162F afterwards during the set.

I know, bacteria and all that makes people cook it to 165F (or higher) before taking it off ... I say NAH to that. Turkey heated that hot prior to removal from oven is terrible IMHO.

If you do it whole, you're limited on size to around 16 lbs due to the height of the lid, but other than that ... I've done turkeys on the Weber many, many times. Besides briquets I also have a metal smoker box I'll add some hardwood to and drop on the coals ... apple, pecan, and cherry are all great choices and all impart a very specific flavor. I usually stay away from stronger ones like mesquite, oak, and hickory.

Comes out night-and-day better than baked-in-oven turkey IMHO, and aside from setting up/lighting the fire and tending to the cooking temps a little bit via the flues, it's not that much harder.

in the oven the day after Thanksgiving ( broth and all)

Unaware of this, my sister in law and I conjured up a massive batch of turkey and dumplings using all the broth, and a good bit of the turkey meat.

Fast forward to about 2 am when our cats started furiously excavating their litter box. Shortly thereafter the dogs started banging at the door to go outside. The poor animals got their turkey early while we were making the dish.

Then it hit all of us. It was an interesting night, especially since there was only one bathroom and 4 adults.

SIL and her husband were in their own place and had an equally eventful night.

Fortunately, we were spared the horrid aching and vomiting. We were able to drive back to Nashville on Sunday with no stops.

A little sour cream in a baked potato, maybe?

I think I will have turkey, stuffing or potatoes, and a couple green vegs. I'm deciding between the carbs and which vegs to pick. Dessert with be almond flour gingerbread cookies with cream cheese frosting. I just got some monkfruit sweetener and I'm looking forward to trying it in baking.

Best: bakery yeast rolls, sour dough bread, and cornbread.

You usually have the potatoes and stuffing already, and then some people add mac and cheese and other starches like yams or sweet potatoes to that. Isn't that enough carbs for one meal?

She made creamed pearl onions. Major yack!

I boil actual whole, frozen cranberries for a few minutes, let them cool, and drain. Then add plenty of sugar (hey--once a year!), chopped fresh pears, and almonds. Sometimes with orange peel. Refrigerate. Delish.

I've been using the same sweet potato recipe for years. Slice whole sweet potatoes, sprinkle with unsalted butter and a little brown sugar. Pecans and a little nutmeg on top. Yummers!

Have actually been craving fresh pears but haven't seen them in our poor-side -of-town supermarket in forever, sooo I need to take 15-20min drive to other markets in hopes they're not sold out.

Love orange peel too.

Yuk! Ugh! Gross! I can't stand mushy, soggy, amorphous bread-like things being passed off as food. First of all the sight of it physically repulses me, as does the texture. I can't even get past that to get it into my mouth.

When I am with my family, they always have to make a separate dish for me and a few others that is just an extra smaller dish of stuffing that was baked in the oven and is crispy on top and light and fluffy underneath w/ lots of poultry seasoning in it. That is the only way I can eat it.

76. This doesn't really belong here but my favorite Thanksgiving memory...

Nov 2021

Its not about food at all but I was just reading these posts on Thanksgiving and thinking of it so thought I'd share...

My dad died 14 years ago and my mother has been with a guy for most of that time since who I really can't stand, a very stupid obnoxious person in my opinion, but whatever, she does what she wants. Our family is not an ounce religious and never has been, but this guy insisted in one of those early Thanksgivings that they were together that before anyone could eat we needed to go around the table and everyone say a prayer of what we were thankful for. He started it with some sappy religious BS of course and everyone is sitting at the table rolling their eyes. It went to the next person then the next with innocuous and areligious pronouncements of thanks. About halfway around my drunk uncle starts into a long diatribe of thanks for a bunch of strange things in which he made very little sense and even cried I think, and then he hit upon the plight of "the Indians and we're really gathered to celebrate how we had FUCKED them when you really think about it" then proceeded to drop about 4 more F-bombs. Immediately everyone perked up and my brother was wide ass grinning at me across the table. We were both enjoying what we surely thought was the greatest fucking prayer ever as it hadn't even occurred to us how fun it would be to scatter F-bombs through a Thanksgiving prayer... needless to say the prayer circle came to a premature halt before I ever got my turn and it has never been brought up again through succeeding Thanksgiving dinners!

My grandmother's family, which lived in Boston long ago, always served them at Thanksgiving.

Well, I actually never ate them! I've still never ate a mollusk of ANY kind, so I wouldn't know if I hate them... would I?

Thanksgiving and Christmas. Just canned oysters & the liquid, cream, lots of crumbled up crackers and some butter on the top. Baked until bubbly

I used to pick out the oysters and slip them to my sister. I loved the flavor but hated the texture of the oysters. Same with my mom's oyster soup.

Fast Forward to a big Stranded Student Thanksgiving in Boston. Of course I made that because "it's not Thanksgiving without it" Some guy shouts out "who brought the oysters?" When I confessed, he thanked me for that touch of home. He was from South Carolina.

I do not know where that tradition evolved, but she said her mother always made them.

Based on how my grandmother's oysters looked when I was a kid, I think she did something very similar! There was definitely some kind of cream and crackers (or maybe toasted bread) mixed with them.

If I'd been older, I might've tried it. The oysters themselves just looked unappealing to me.

I'm sure that something like Chinese stir fry would've made me leery too when I was a kid, if I had trouble identifying everything mixed within it. Now I blindly trust the food preparers and shovel it down. Lol.

my favorite thing to reminisce about ...

yes, it is the puking kitty gravy boat. Never had one, but I always think about this around this time of year since I first saw it years ago - it kills.
Not a big fan of any traditional Tk'day food in general - i guess a nice dry brined spatcocked turkey and my own stuffing is pretty good. the rest is either meh or yuk.

the Loathe list is any kind of yellow squash and pumpkin pie

Oh on edit - I found the original puky video - ROFLMAO...

on the subject of squash: have you ever had a squash casserole made with summer squash?

It is in a class by itself!! I prefer the yellow squash but it can be made with zucchini or a combo of the two.

(most of the South, actually) Sweet cornbread definitely is an above the Mason-Dixon entity.

The best is made with white corn meal, baked in an iron skillet with enough hot fat preheated in the skillet to give the cornbread a nice crispy bottom. Cut into wedges and devour!

I use Martha White white cornbread mix which is just right for 2 of us and works perfectly in my small iron skillet.

I do love the Boston Chicken cornbread loaves though. They are more like cake and I eat them for dessert

I like, usually looove everything else though not until my early mid teens. Though I haven't tried cranberries in decades.

I was a very picky eater before that - then it was turkey, white potatoes, our Greek meat stuffing (separate), carrots - pretty much only ... 😄

130. Turkey.

I’m serious.

This year I am cooking the family Thanksgiving dinner and there will not be one microgram of turkey within 75 feet of my dinner tables. This is what I will be cooking:

Course 1: Prosecco, olives and sliced Parmesan.
Course 2: Two cheeses, Italian sausage slices and bruschetta.
Course 3: Spaghetti. I found a recipe for the sauce they made in prison in Goodfellas. I already have my three small onions.
Course 4a: smoked beef and pork roasts. Small amounts of jellied and whole berry homemade cranberry sauce will be served on this plate.
Course 4b: green beans and mushrooms with bacon bits
Course 5: Tossed green salad.
Course 6: Fresh fruit and two cheeses different from the ones in course 2.
Course 7: Two or three slices of different pies, small scoop ice cream, small scoop cool whip, small scoop real whipped cream
Course 8: Sumatra coffee, served with biscotti
Course 9: cognac

In case anyone wants to know why I use a five-burner range…
