My brother, who we were afraid we might lose just a few weeks ago, is now in rehab at Alta Bates in Berkeley! He was finally diagnosed with LG-1 autoimmune encephalitis, which isn't exactly common, but leave it to him to have something weird, as my other brother (the doctor) said. He started to rally after his third plasmapharesis, and had a total of five of those. He still requires assistance getting out of bed, and he has some short term memory deficits, but on the whole is doing much better than expected. Hopefully he will be home for Christmas!

(54,277 posts)Kudos to the doctors who provided the correct diagnosis. In cases of unusual afflictions, a correct diagnosis is often half the way to recovery. My wife was (correctly) diagnosed with a very rareand usually inevitably fatalform of cancer five years ago. But because it was caught and correctly identified in its earliest stage, the surgeon said she might just be that one in ten thousand that survives it. So far, she has been. No recurrence detected at all, so far, and that is five years that apparently no woman diagnosed with this particular cancer ever has a right to hope for. Good on ALL of you for not giving up!

Sounds like your family has a similar tendency. So happy for you all!

(31,373 posts)Uncommon illness is a challenge to diagnose. Some docs are really challenged by it and won't give up until they figure it out. Thank goodness for them! I'm currently reading Diagnosis by Lisa Sanders, MD. It's a series of case studies focused on solving medical mysteries.
