(10,154 posts)We use to have 2 of them near by about 10 years ago. They both closed while Wal-Mart added a super store. That was back before W crashed the economy. Now all we have is one giant dirty looking Wal-Mart with their parking lot full of trailers and campers.
I miss the days when you could choose what stores to shop at. To tell you honestly, I dislike the Waltons worse then Bezos. So, I shop on line as much as I can. Do we have a major retail store that isn't owned by creepy people who just want to bilk their employees and fund most of the forced abortion and GOP propaganda?

(3,493 posts)How old are these? Does Kmart even advertise in places where they still exist? I miss my Kmart.

But if you search YouTube for 'ship my knickers'......
I'll let you decide.

(17,911 posts)In the early 2000's, Kmart was a moldering corpse, killed off by Walmart, when it was merged with Sears by a two bit stock jobber turned hedge fund vulture who thought he could actually run a retail giant. Kind of like Bud Fox in the first Wall Street film who worked as a baggage handler a couple summers...sure, he can run an airline...how hard can it be?
Now the crown jewels are dead or scattered to the wind. Kenmore is no more. Die Hard and Craftsman can be bought nearly everywhere. Those brands and others were once top quality at reasonable prices, and you could only buy them at Sears...back in the day anyway.

(35,325 posts)with junk from Kmart ruined both stores. Dumped Kenmore and Craftsman.

(17,911 posts)Growing up, if we needed an appliance, Kenmore was top of the list. Tools? Dad swore by Craftsman's quality and replacement guarantee. Tires? Sears and Western Auto in that order. Worked at Sears in tools and automotive a couple summers while an undergrad and grew to love the place. A real pity it's come to this.

(50,554 posts)One of my sisters has made a career of being a corporate buyer, and shes done it for about eight different chains
at one time she was the buyer for the biggest association of funeral homes in the US. (Shes at the point in her career that when she interviews, the only question she asks is, how many times a year do I get to go to China? If the answer isnt at least twice, that place is not for her. Her current employer sends her four times. If you want to know where to stay when you next visit Shenzhen, let me know and Ill ask.)
One year she was buying Christmas for Kmart. She found a product she thought was going to be super popular and called Lampert to tell him the good news.
The conversation went something like this
We are going to be selling this product, and the price will be $17.95. (The manufacturer printed the price on the box and hang tags, so she had to tell them what it would be at the factory.)
No, the price will be $19.95.
Walmart is selling it for $17.95, so we need to match the price to compete. I havent seen Targets buyer, but theyll also sell for $17.95.
I dont care what Walmart is selling it for.
They wound up clearancing out the entire shipment the week before Christmas and lost big money because the customers cared what Walmart was selling it for. She quit working at Kmart over that incident
that thing would have made Kmart a lot of money but Lampert didnt care.

(17,911 posts)Sears was worth more to him as piece parts to sell off than as a whole. Damn shame. Maybe that's just because I'm old, but damn shame still.
Thanks for the offer. Haven't been to China since 2006, 2007 helping set up an overseas sub. Back then, you could cut the Shanghai air with a knife. That was surreal, but an interesting place nonetheless.

(37,449 posts)is gone in my town...I noticed the ghost image of the sign which I plan to photograph. We initially had WT Grants, then Caldors who turn the store into a superstore with tag along stores in a mall. That concept drove them more business', K-Mart took over the entire space and it slowly went down hill when they killed off the little stores, some ma & pa. This wasn't even one of the mega-malls just a local shopping plaza, but it had everything.
