(72,179 posts)I won't go into detail.
I've just done nearly everything around the house to fill my time that I possibly can, and now I'm just idly surfing the net...

Good thing I'm a pagan and don't "believe"!

(26,525 posts)I remember when my kid was little and I worked part-time... the stores are pretty empty and easy to navigate at 10 am!
So I feel you!
You take care, Aristus.

(81,259 posts)I found out I actually really enjoy them.
I think I have seen every battle fought in the Pacific.
PS John Wayne single handedly won most of those battles.
Aristus
(72,179 posts)John Wayne won all of those, because the word had not yet got out that he weaseled his way out of serving.
Irish_Dem
(81,259 posts)But I think the real military brass at the time, gave some actors a pass on serving.
It was thought making movies for propaganda or morale purposes was better than getting sent to combat.
My dad was career Air Force and I grew up next to aircraft hangers and runways.
So it is neat watching the Navy movies, the ships are so neat. And their planes land on the water.
That is so fun to see.
Aristus
(72,179 posts)never forgave John Wayne for chickening out. When, after the war, Ford and Wayne were filming "They Were Expendable", Ford filmed a scene in which Wayne has to salute a superior officer, and demanded over forty takes, to rub it in that Wayne had never served.
Irish_Dem
(81,259 posts)I have never been a John Wayne fan. Guess I knew there was something not right about him.
My uncle was in the Navy, he was killed when his ship was sunk by the enemy at Guadalcanal. My dad flew combat in three wars.
From watching the movies about the Pacific in WWII, I never realized we could easily have lost that war.
The Japanese naval fleet was vastly superior to ours. And what we did have was damaged at Pearl Harbor.
It appears that we won by sheer determination, bravery, very smart naval leadership, and luck.

(12,002 posts)wounded soldiers, sailors and marines at Hawaii during WWII. William Manchester wrote about it. He was then a marine recovering from his wounds.
After my evacuation from Okinawa, I had the enormous pleasure of seeing Wayne humiliated in person at Aiea Heights Naval Hospital in Hawaii. Only the most gravely wounded, the litter cases, were sent there. The hospital was packed, the halls lined with beds. Between Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the Marine Corps was being bled white."
"Each evening, Navy corpsmen would carry litters down to the hospital theater so the men could watch a movie. One night they had a surprise for us. Before the film the curtains parted and out stepped John Wayne, wearing a cowboy outfit:10-gallon hat, bandanna, checkered shirt, two pistols, chaps, boots and spurs. He grinned his aw-shucks grin, passed a hand over his face and said, "Hi ya, guys!" He was greeted by a stony silence. Then somebody booed. Suddenly everyone was booing."
