Japanese Navy started it way back in the day to get more Thiamine (Vitamin B1) and other nutrients into sailor's diets.

the Globe mentioned a salary figure in his job interview. He was so dumbstruck at how much higher it was then he'd been making, or could reasonably expect, that he didn't react right away. After a long pause, the interviewer mentioned an even higher dollar figure, and my brother blurted out "That...sounds good."
He always wondered later if he had paused again, if they might have gone up even higher!
