The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWe welcomed a new member of the family yesterday.
Her name is Maybee
like maybe Im nuts for getting a puppy. Shes a tri-color border collie born on a working cattle ranch. I lost my 14 year old border collie and hiking buddy in August and I miss him terribly. Hitting the trails isnt nearly as fun alone. Maybee cant do trails until shes fully vaccinated but Its going to be one heck of a spring once shes ready to go.

(26,021 posts)Smartest and best all around dog that I ever had was a border collie. As I recall, mine was a handful, getting into everything and chewing everything until he was around a year old. But it was worth dealing with.
Maybe is a beauty.

(1,343 posts)So smart! So protective! So much fun! So loyal! All in one absolutely adorable package!
wnylib
(26,021 posts)another one in a heartbeat, except that now I live in a city high rise apartment where it would not have enough freedom to run and get exercise. Plus, I am getting old to walk a dog in all kinds of weather. Not like when I had a fenced in yard and could let the dog out on his own.

(7,790 posts)She is such a sweet looking darling! We lost our border collie 4 years ago last Thanksgiving. He was 14 and the love of our lives. We ended up with a rescue hound who weighs nearly as much as I do and comes waist high on me. And has NO idea how to "dog." First thing I thought of once I got done oohing and ahhing over Maybee was telling hubs, we STILL needed a border collie to teach Lexie how to "dog"! (LOL)
Many happy trails to you and Maybee... I see many wonderful bouncy years ahead of you!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!!
MontanaMama
(24,722 posts)when border collies leave us. I was devastated when my boy, Tag, passed. He was a part of me. I didnt think I had another dog in me
and here we are.
I totally support you getting Lexie her own border collie.
Merry Christmas to you, hubs and Lexie.

(26,525 posts)Our Border Collie, Howdy, lived to 17! He was a character. Great at helping us round up our chickens! Loyal to a fault.

(24,722 posts)Another chicken herder my boy Tag was the best chicken herder ever. Gentle but firm. Maybee started herding today shes rough around the edges at only 7 weeks but she sure shows promise. My girls didnt know what to think of her but they went right in the coop when she gave them the eye.

When I was a kid, we had a dog named Sooner. Because when my mother, sister, and I brought him home, my Dad said, "Sooner or later, that dog's going to shit on the carpet and I'm not cleaning it up." It was sooner. As a matter of fact it was almost immediately after he said it.

(100,133 posts)She told me how at the age of 3 or so shed hang on to Jacks scruff and wander all over with the being she thought of as her actual brother, without human adult supervision. ❤️ She always felt utterly safe with that dog.
He had a nice long life, I do know that. Her dating life was punctuated by Jack persistently inserting himself between her and anyone else sitting on the sofa for a visit.
Happy healthy new year to you and your pup, with many years of companionship.

We lost our almost 14yo GSD, Noelle, in February (combination of degenerative myelopathy and organ failure). I've been trying to talk hubby into getting another one, then life got interrupted with my cancer journey. I'm done chemo. I'm done surgery and am getting back to normal. He said we could get another one once I get through radiation (daily from Jan 3 through mid-February). He did say that he would want it to be a smaller dog - one that we could pick up and snuggle with and would be able to RV with us easily. Noelle didn't like the car and wasn't a snuggly dog - she was happy keeping our family in her site and laying close by.
Hope you have a great holiday with your new pup!

(17,623 posts)I just love black and white dogs. I lost my last companion over two years ago and not a day goes by that I don't think of her. That last picture makes me want to have another, but I no longer live in a house with a nice big fenced yard and am getting older. My last dog was 16 when she died and I'm almost 73 and live in a cold climate. I'm being realistic about starting over again with a puppy.
As someone else upthread said, I'll just live vicariously through your pictures and tales. Enjoy your sweetie.
