I generally have a low tolerance for violence, but the premise is somewhat intriguing to me.
To give you an idea of what I can handle: Walking Dead, no way. I'm about to quit Lilyhammer. Breaking Bad, nope. But I can handle The Witcher, for whatever reason. I watched a few seasons of "Vikings" but had to drop out after a while.

I would highly recommend the show.

(102,357 posts)but it doesn't take much imagination to absorb what is happening.
So, my guess is both the original and the sequel are going to be too much for you. Even though both were surprisingly interesting and less gratuitously violent than one might imagine for such fare.

(2,343 posts)In the original ten seasons, I found a couple seasons somewhat lacking, but the others are outstanding. The fourth season with John Lithgow as the antagonist is particularly outstanding.
There have been so many episodes with powerful cliffhangers. I've stayed up way too late many nights because I had to continue on with the next episode.
The new series, Dexter: New Blood, is turning out to be very good itself. I'm loving the premise and story line.
The one downside is any Dexter I meet, I always wonder if they're a serial killer!

Dexter himself is more clinical than violent.

(9,291 posts)Im watching this years season on Showtime, and Im so stressed they are going to take out Michael C Hall. Will find out next week.
Dexter is a serial killer, with a code. He only murders people who have killed and injured others. It why we can pretend to back him. We can understand why hes doing it, even if its wrong. In the original run, he works for Miami PD as a blood splatter analyst, so he normally assist with investigations after the fact.
When Dexter kills he uses a knife, and his killings are ritualistic in nature. However, you always know its coming and I have no idea why, but I dont find it gory. Very few jump scares, which I dont like anymore due to my age.
So youll know just after a few episodes. Its also has humorous times, that are done well and takes the edge off.
Hope this helps.

(2,252 posts)I don't have access to the new series. A friend of mine keeps singing it's praises. Hopefully it will be released on DVD so I can binge watch it if my local Library gets it in.
