I think a good case could be made for Jim Morrison having clinical depression:
"During the recording of the L.A. Woman album, Morrison talked about taking a holidayfrom what, and for how long, never specified. (When you need to take a holiday from being an adored rock star in Los Angeles, things are definitely not right.) Eve Babitzs sister Mirandi, who knew Morrison and his long-term partner Pamela Courson socially, thought that Morrisons excessive boozing and drugging were an attempt to cover up undiagnosed depression. She comments: It was as if he was very unhappy inside. Perhaps all the drunken bluster and daredevil stunts and authority-baiting were a numb mans way of feeling something. This suggests another way of looking at his writing, too. For all its mythic yearning, it leaves very little sense of real emotional engagement. Theres just the suspicion that this ready-made poetic syntax might be a perfect way of not saying what it is youre really feeling (or, worse: what youre not feeling)."

A lot of those "adored rock stars" were simply burning out, whether the result was their own actual death, or the death of a band falling apart, or the death of a career. They were under incredible pressure to get through grueling tours, to come up with the next hit, to maintain an image. They often couldn't get the holidays or breaks they needed. A lot of the drug use and drinking was to cope with the stress.

(24,272 posts)left for France, he was facing federal charges regarding his behavior on a commercial airliner. He may very well have done prison time if convicted. I would imagine that was quite stressful. I sort of see him as the same as other rock icons like Janis and Jimi who met an early and untimely death. If they hadn't died when they did, it would have happened shortly therafter with similar circumstances. To put it simply, if they hadn't died of a drug overdose, they would have died of a drug overdose. It's all very sad. One can only imagine all the music we missed when we lost them.
And then there's Keith Richards...
