It's the new rage. You are only allowed to play once a day . - no sign up, no email, no ads . Link to free game (thanks markie)
https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/
You have to guess the word of the day within six tries. You start with a wild guess and then deduce each time because correct letters turn yellow and correct letters in the proper position turn green. At first I thought it was easy but it isn't.

I got lucky on the third guess!
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)Can definitely see why that matters huh. Almost like wheel of fortune - picking common lettered words?
Nittersing
(6,538 posts)Just that "O". So I moved the O and then picked four more letters that hadn't been used yet. Very lucky.
I *do* try to put three vowels in the first word... I think that helps... we'll see.

(42,770 posts)Guess they don't care about language like Scrabble. Might be interesting to just try a nonsensical word tomorrow tho. Like aeiou
Disaffected
(4,759 posts)Would not accept it - it has to be an actual word.
Unfortunately I don't believe there is a word consisting only of the five vowels.

One time I correctly solved a Sunday NYT puzzle though the answer key had two letters different from my solution. That and linking John Wayne to the Zodiac case are my life's big accomplishments.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)Or key wrong? My goal is to do it in pen without having to fix anything. Closest I've gotten is 1. Grrr.
Linking John Wayne to Zodiac case? Do tell!!
Harker
(14,447 posts)across and down, that shared the initial. The clues were "speedo. reading" and "mil. stat." I reflexively with "KPH" and "KIA." Checking the solution key, I was surprised to see an "M" where I'd put the "K." So I was both "wrong" and "right" to my satisfaction.
Not earth shattering, but fun!
Ink? That's brave. I stuck to my pencil rituals... Ticonderoga #2, freshly sharpened, then dulled a bit so as not to catch newsprint...
For a quick version of the Zodiac/Wayne connection, may I refer you to my DU journal? It's about the fourth item in there, headed "buckle up."

Okay so i read your journal on John Wayne and zodiac. Also very interesting. But I did wonder, how do we know John Wayne didn't ad lib the titwillow?
Harker
(14,447 posts)When he said "that was all Don Siegel", I take that as reliable, especially as the song, which describes a bird's intentional plunge from its branch into the river below, foreshadows J.B. Books's decision to go out shooting rather than dying in bed from cancer.
Lauren Bacall's character was playing that piece on the piano when Wayne chimed in, so there was evident preplanning and direction.
I don't know much of anything about John Wayne as a person, though I'd be surprised if I were to find him to have been an operetta afficionado.

Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)Possible level of deductive reasoning with a degree of chance factored in depending on the secret word. In two is absolutely pure chance. Chance diminishes with the more tries you attempt.
Here's an example. Swallwell knew the 5 letter word began with a and ended in y. I looked it up. There were maybe a dozen possible words it could have been and he picked the right one.
So for you to get it in 3 each day is truly remarkable! Bravo! Everyone needs to start listening to you a whole lot more LOL

(4,759 posts)I cheated a bit. My objective was, out of curiosity, to find out what description the program would present for a first try correct answer i.e. it said "genius".
I simply worked out the correct answer on my PC and entered that answer on my tablet.
I guess my point in posting was that a correct answer on the first try would in no way be an act of genius, as described, but simple one of cheating since there are approximately 150,000 five letter words in the English language and the chances of any correct first try simply by guessing would be near zero (1 in 150,000 or, maybe somewhat less unlikely if it is assumed that particularly obscure words would not be included).
I know, I have too much time on my hands....
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)Luck. Actually almost pure luck getting it In two. Then you have to use your brain.

IMO part of the fun in puzzle solving such as this is testing the limits and looking for innovative solutions.
As well, coming up with interesting variations such as varying the number of letters, and maximum tries eg. four letters and four tries or, six letters and six or maybe seven tries.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)Time goes by. Think the success now is the pure simplicity of it. No ads, no sign up, no complex instructions. That you can easily share results is genius. That it remembers you. That you have all day if you want to go back to it. No clock! No app. No cost. Fits almost everyone. Except people like my husband who doesn't automatically see possible words in his head. But he's still trying and sure that builds his brain's missing piece
How would you solve the problem or effect of randomness and luck? Sometimes certain letters can result in many many possible secret words. (Example the other day for me - picked polar then sonar then finally solar Where other letters or combinations of letters have very few possibilities.
