(63,912 posts)me smile. "This is not a pipe" is my favorite work by him. I wrote lovingly about him in my first book, which was a collection of art essays that I posted here on DU.
IIRC, I saw "This is not a pipe" at LACMA and was surprised to see how small it was (I didn't know what I was expecting). I love it when I see some art work I admired and found it in a museum I was visiting! It doesn't happen often but when it does it's a great feeling.
Years ago, I was traveling with a friend in Paris and in the Louvre she said "Did you see "Virgin of the Rocks"?" I said "No, that's in London!" which was where I had seen it.Yep, Leonardo painted two versions of the same scene and same title.

(34,195 posts)I am a fan (?) of Grandma Moses and my favorite painting by her measures 19.8" x 26".
I've seen it a few times in the San Diego Museum of Art, to which it was gifted in 1958.

(63,912 posts)the strong color that Moses uses here. I actually like this work. The strong use of vibrant red is very nicely done here IMO. Colore!
