Update
Received an email yesterday to check the SocSec website because there was an update on status. Did that and what do we find!
Huzzah!
We have processed 3 of 3 steps of your application.
We made a decision to approve your application on January 20, 2022.
Benefits & Payments
You are receiving:
Social Security (Retirement)
Your next payment is:
on February 3, 2022
Did the application on-line because we're in France. She hasn't started receiving benefits yet.
Called the Federal Benefits office at the Embassy, which now refers everyone to Baltimore. The office there says that her application is still being reviewed (possible code for: at the bottom of a deep pile of applications), and they will call and if they don't call back.
I'm trying to get a handle on whether it's just people living abroad who are experiencing delays in receiving benefits or anyone.

(59,137 posts)Not sure how it works for those overseas, but I helped a person with their application in TN recently. Advocate told me to have to appeal 6-7 times!
I hope her case is approved quickly.

(17,572 posts)Mrs GoS's application is straightforward. No disability, proper work history, correct ID. US citizen by birth and only been in France since 2018. Stopped working in 2019.

(59,137 posts)But TN is a disgustingly red state.
I hope her claim is processed & approved quickly.
Not sure how it would work overseas, but often in the States, the applicant is required to go to a sketchy dr. for evaluation. 🙄
It is insurance & their primary goal is to not pay, so they drag people through paperwork hell all too often.
Did she have to apply in the state she lived & worked in?

(59,137 posts)I know at one point, tfg had placed a freeze on hiring or replacing SSA staff. Not sure if that has changed.

(2,737 posts)It takes a good three months for claims to be processed. I went through it last year, and that is about how long it took. I wish you the best of good luck in successful processing of your claim for benefits.

The ss web site is easy to use and clear.

(17,572 posts)Perhaps because she's asking for the benefit to be paid into a French bank account?

(31,909 posts)and she finally received her first direct deposit this month--9 months later--reflecting the change in her SS benefits. She went round and round with them.
When I was widowed in 2018, the change in my benefits hit my direct deposit before 3 months were up and one month of that time was waiting for my then required in person appointment at the SS office.
There could be three things affecting the review process: decrease in staff from previous Administration; closed offices because of the pandemic; backlog of cases due to the increase in case load from the higher death rate of SS recipients due to Covid.

(17,572 posts)And I'm 12 years older.
We were stepping away from our business and needed the money when I started collecting benefits.
