Normally, in less than 48 hours after a storm they have been by and plowed my driveway shut, again, but at least the street is clear. Up until now it's been a relatively mild Winter but for the few snows we've had, our subdivision streets haven't been plowed or salted, once.
Now most of the snow on the street is compacted by car tires but the snow is still deep in front of my mail box. I doubt the postal workers can access it. I'm limited on what I can do, snow removal wise, due to a tricky knee but I guess I'll have to risk it and see if I can shovel and snow blow some clearing.
Sorry - I'm just frustrated because I HATE WINTER SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(44,807 posts)I remember a few really bad snow storm when I was stationed in Philadelphia. Fortunately I took the subway/bus to the base.

(27,834 posts)I've found that out, on several occasions. But usually things are well taken care of, by now.
I'm dreading going out there to try and clear some room. It's BITTER cold. My only other option is to sit in the kitchen and watch until I see the postal vehicle, and then hobble out to get the mail hand delivered. Of course, I'll STILL have to get things righted, if that plow doesn't show up, soon.

(4,795 posts)Our city even plows senior citizen's driveways at no cost. We just moved here last May to be near our son and his family. The city has a great tax base and they certainly take care of their citizens.

(27,834 posts)He has one of those huge, can handle almost any snowfall kind of snow blowers so 11" wouldn't have been a problem for him.
However, something is going on with him and he's rarely every home, now. I've noticed tire tracks in his driveway but he hasn't bothered clearing it. If his snow blower is out of commission he KNOWS I'd gladly lend him mine. I would have cleared it for him if my knee wasn't so sore.
Oh well. For as long as I'm able I'll keep taking care of things. And when I can't (and if family isn't available) I'll just hire someone.

(8,834 posts)Be careful shoveling snow. Tricky knees can be, well, they can be tricky. Hoping the Snow Plow Gods remember your kindness to Mittens and fellow feral cats and take care of you. 🥰

(1,044 posts)We didnt get the inches of snow you did, but Ive got 2 of frozen sleet/ice under 3 of snow. I went out and got the bottom of the driveway cleared just before the plow guy came by. He saw me and pivoted into my driveway to clear the ice chunks. ♥️ Im not even trying to get the ice up. Fuck it. Im a little old lady and an icy driveway is not the hill I want to die on.

(27,834 posts)I was standing there, having just completed clearing it. And I was absolutely stunned and then furiously livid. A neighbor came running down and said he saw what the plow driver did, and he did the exact same thing to another driveway, while the person was out there.
The answer to my complaint was there was nothing they could do about it.
I will say that it never happened again so perhaps some action was taken. 99% of the time I have been able to quickly remove the snow or just drive over it. BUT that day he left an ice/snow berm that stood over a a foot high and even wider than that, across the entire end of the driveway.

(10,497 posts)Usually, I wave at the driver and point at the 3-4 feet of hard snow and ice dumped at the end of the drive and they come back and clear it out. Last year, a driver got out of his truck and shoveled the end of the driveway for me. I asked the mayor to recognize the driver's good deed.
I'm not on a snow route.

(22,218 posts)but yesterday was tough. Snow drifts 2 feet deep in the driveway in front of our house. The blower did its job, but wasn't happy about it, particularly on the berm left by the plows at the end of the driveway. I wasn't happy about it either. I usually don't mind the clearing process, but 8 degrees and a biting wind. I had to blow in the direction of the wind to avoid the "snow globe" effect. I'm about ready for spring.
The forecast was for 4-7. I went out, mid storm, to snow blow because I was afraid if it got much deeper (it was 6" at that point) my snow blower would struggle. I did the 2nd clearing the next day. AND I just bit the bullet and went out to clear by the mail box, and the other side of the driveway. Hopefully that will mitigate the size of the deposit left by the plow - if it ever shows up.
It's 5 degrees, right now. My knee is back under the heating pad.

(4,671 posts)plowed Friday night because her street is the one used by 1st responders...The plow took out, and I mean smashed, two of her neighbors' street-side mail boxes. They could not pre-treat due to the rain, then freezing rain, then sleet, then lots of snow. I heard TPTB even had a hard time getting plow drivers in to work due to the underpinnings of ice...Lots of folks in the city only have street parking, and will be plowed in when the plows do come. Levels 2 and 3 orders are also still in effect around here too.

(13,032 posts)Its been a different kind of winter. Here we got missed with that last storm, half inch, maybe.
We depend on snow here for the tourist trade, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, all the winter activities. Snow we have left is like frozen crunchy styrofoam coated with a glaze of ice. Next two clippers look like misses also.
We snowshoe hike
not much of that going on, which is our main winter exercise activity. Couple
three hours of that is great for my seventy y.o. heart. Now its inside machines, elliptical, health rider, bowflex, hope this keeps us limber enough for gardening which is rapidly coming upon us.
The cold though, wowsers! Heres hoping the frozen weather will keep the tick population down, gotta try to find the good stuff.

(27,834 posts)It was about the width of 2 average sized cars so people had to be considerate of oncoming traffic. And they were.
Had he not done that, NOBODY could get out of their driveways for days. I know the road commission was concentrating on the main roads and freeways. It's still a little frustrating, though.

(37,651 posts)Lots of traffic and noise. I got use to the noise after a few nights. I do have to wait sometimes for traffic to clear before I can pull out.
Good part is, its a State Highway and the Governor gets it plowed quickly. The end gets plowed in, but nice neighbors with plows dig that out for me. Also I'm have a couple of thousand acres of woods on two sides of my yard.
Hope those plows get to you today.

(27,834 posts)I cleared my driveway, about 5 feet of street on one side, and a good 10, or so, on the other. HOPEFULLY that will mitigate how much is there for the plow to deposit at the end of my driveway. Honestly, at this point I'm hoping they give us a miss.

(27,834 posts)According to local news, it was the 12th heaviest snow fall. The funny thing was, Detroit and south was slated to be really slammed - some estimates of a potential for 30". But, they ended up getting FAR less than the area north of them.
It was also our heaviest snow since 2016.
