I would take my daughters with me on day trips over to « safe » neighboring countries, like Belgium or Switzerland. I wanted to give them an early appreciation of how small Germany really was, and how important it was to know other languages and cultures. My wife and I felt it was vital that they learn early that the rest of the world was NOT like us. It was a lesson they never forgot.
