I recognized him immediately; but my brain completely froze, and I forgot his name.
All I could do was stare at him, not wanting to admit to him that I forgot his name.
(He stared back at me, probably thinking I was some kind of weirdo)

Speaking of Wavy Gravy..
After graduating from college, I worked on a fundraiser for "Ethiopian Famine Relief" at the Berkeley Community Theater and chatted with Wavy Gravy briefly backstage. (I think he was the emcee for the event)
Lenny Bruce was his manager, and he was the one who suggested to Wavy that he should move out to California from the East Coast.
And you're right...he is a kind, sweet guy.

(24,906 posts)I was 1985, I think. Not belong before he died. It was a concert at a winery in Saratoga overlooking Silicon Valley. They had built an amphitheater there and it was about a 1,200 seat venue. I had worked on some of the graphics and production of posters of the event, and the promoter gave me two all access passes. There was a swimming pool on the property near the amphitheater and there were tables around it with wine set up on the tables. Me and my guest arrived early and sat at one of the tables and Muddy Waters came in and sat at one of the tables next to us. I introduced ourselves and then sat back down, and left him with his entourage and just took it all in.
Johnny Winter, who was playing with him, unanounced, that night stopped by and talked with Muddy for awhile. I was so starstruck I can't remember anything that was said the whole time.

That's when they decided they needed to own their own record label.

Invited backstage again at Princeton a couple of weeks later, and then at a concert with other bands in Central Park NYC. Met some members of the New Riders at that one too but can't recall names. (12,251 posts)I actually just came close to meeting Tom and Dick Smothers. I was 18 and was with my Aunt Helen at the Albany NY airport to buy a ticket to go home to Nebraska after a month-long visit with her at her home in Troy. Auntie had a premonition or a vision or something that the plane I'd be on would crash, so she pulled me out of line and explained why I shouldn't buy a ticket. Just then, who should walk up and stand in line, but the Smothers Brothers. Tom caught my eye and smiled and winked at me. I smiled and looked down, probably blushing. This went on back and forth for a minute or two, and then, pulling a little notebook and a pen out of his shirt pocket, he walked toward me. Aunt Helen suddenly grabbed my arm and whisked me away. She was well-built woman - tall and strong - and I think my feet were flying as we went to her Cadillac. As we left the parking area and headed onto the highway, she looked in the rear-view mirror and said something like, "Well, I never! They are following us!" I looked back and saw that Tom was hanging out the passenger side window of their car up to his waist, blowing kisses at us. Auntie ordered me to stop looking back, but I couldn't help it. With their horn honking and Tom blowing kisses, they followed us almost to Troy before turning around and going back toward Albany.
I did really meet then-Gov. Rockefeller and his wife Happy. Auntie and I were having lunch at an Albany restaurant one day, and the governor and his wife stopped by our table to say hello to her. Auntie introduced me as her niece from the Nebraska sticks and asked me to say some of my hickish Nebraska things for them that she thought were hilarious. Before I could, the governor asked me if I lived near the Sandhills (I did) because, he said, he had always wanted to go there. Mrs. R began visiting with me too, and a bit later as they were leaving, they both gave my shoulder a little squeeze and said how nice it was to meet me, and then Mrs. R murmured by my ear, "Stay strong."
In the 60s I watched a episode of Gun Smoke being shot in the Black Hills and got James Arness's autograph.
I never met John Wayne. My mom thought she did once, but it turned out it was John Payne.
