The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWhat a pleasant surprise I received at Target, just now
I went in to see if they had the kind of kitten kibble the boys like. No such luck. As I was wandering out I saw the cereal aisle and decided to buy a big box of Special K with Red Berries. Nights when I just don't have a specific appetite, I eat a bowl of cereal.
There was a young man in line, in front of me, just finishing what looked like a complicated purchase via a gift card. All of a sudden he told the clerk to add my cereal to his total! It took me a second to comprehend. His explanation was that I just looked like a good person. I thanked him profusely and vowed to pay it forward. He smiled.

(22,031 posts)One Christmas Day, while driving to visit family, I pulled up to the toll booth I used to drive through every day. This was before electronic tolling and I was sort-of friendly with the toll taker since I would see him fairly often. After wishing him a merry Christmas, I paid my toll as well as that for the car behind me. When I saw the toll taker the following week, he told me that I started a trend that lasted about 8 or 10 cars!
Enjoy the cereal.

Where did all the total assholes come from??????????
Last week someone, late at night, siphoned all the gas out of my truck that I park out on the street. I thought that maybe I should just tape a twenty dollar bill inside the gas tank door, but figured they would just take the twenty AND siphon off all my gas.....Not Funny.....

(17,199 posts)A 20 something Mexican who had his wife's shopping list and everything on the list was ahead of me in line.
Grocery total was $68.?? and he only had $60, began by handing the checkout clerk the baby diapers to see
how much it would reduce his bill. I thought that wasn't going to make his wife happy, so I handed him a $10
and refused the change. The look on his face was my reward.
His look....

(8,810 posts)my wife and I have done the exact same thing in grocery stores. We are retired and far from rich, but comfortable.
My wife is an angel and knits thick wool scarves and puts one in a grocery bag with nutrition bars, Gatorade, socks, personal care items, and a ten dollar bill. She puts them in her car, and everyone along her drive who is homeless, she stops and gives one to them.......
Last week when the temp got below zero here, she loaded up her car with her bags and drove around until she distributed all the bags she had..........
I am nominating her for sainthood....................

(14,886 posts)I'm such a slow crocheter - otherwise I'd might do hats.
Once I did a more chunky hat as donation to a yarn store that would bundle them all up and donate them at the end of their drive.
I wonder if chunky yarn neck warmers at least be a little help? Or ear warner's?
Opinions, pls. Good idea?
If I started sometime in the spring, I could get maybe a bunch done.

(14,886 posts)of the "large, furry yarn" (as you put it) she is using to knit those neck scarves.
Yarn is almost always all around yarn used for knitting, crocheting, etc. 👍
And thanks, no rush. 🙂

(8,911 posts)I was in line at a store and the person behind was purchasing a birthday gift for themself.
The person wanted the item as a gift but nobody gifted it. So I told the cashier to add the purchase and I said Happy Birthday.
A second time, a young family was in front of me at Costco trying to buy groceries including a birthday cake for one of their young kids. When they cashed out, they couldn't afford the cake so they asked to put it back. I told the cashier to let them know that I'd pay for it and tell them not to leave. So when it was my turn I paid for the cake, then rang my groceries.
Both thanked me, and told them not to worry, but when you see the same thing, pay it forward. Both agreed.
Happy for your surprise!

(26,259 posts)Shocking lack of canned cat food on the shelves. I've got 2 more cans for the ferals that I am using sparingly when I mix it with the dry.
The boys's canned kitten food is well stocked in the pantry, for now.

(34,374 posts)The cat food shelves at the small, independent grocery store I shop at have been almost bare for a few weeks now. I asked about it and they said their supplier can't get anything. Even larger chains like Kroger are having trouble and stocks are down. I've been able to get my deliveries of canned food but even they have been delayed. Outside Kitty refuses to eat any sort of "pate" type of canned food and forget kibble, lol, so it's been dicey. He's the pickiest feral I've ever encountered. My cats love kibble and I haven't had any problems with kibble deliveries.
It's weird.

(26,259 posts)I have plenty for the boys, right now and Gryff prefers dry food. Madoc is happy with either. BUT the canned food I buy for the ferals is out of stock and has been for a while. Fortunately I bought extra the last time I saw it, but now I'm down to the last two cans. They really love the wet/dry mix but I'm having to make it drier. I bought a couple of cans of sardines to substitute, if I run out of wet food for them. I'll just shred the fish and try to stretch it as far as I can.
I check, every single day, to see if they restock.
Been a shortage here since late last summer. I stock up as much as I can but feel guilty buying it when others need it too. One cat is so finicky too. There are only a few varieties she deigns to eat.
