Is It Safe to Take Tylenol (Acetaminophen) With Advil or Motrin (Ibuprofen)?

I get this question a lot: Is it safe to take acetaminophen with ibuprofen?

The simple answer? Yes, you can safely take acetaminophen and ibuprofen together.

This may surprise you, though: Taking these two medications together works better to relieve pain than taking them separately. Research studies have shown that ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) together work well to relieve certain types of pain with few side effects. In fact, even for extreme dental pain, these medications combined work better than many opioid pain medications (like Vicodin or Norco).

UPDATED TO CORRECT ANY MISLEADING INFO. I DID NOT SUGGEST TAKING ANY MEDICATION WITH ALCOLHOL. Nor did the link I posted.

PEOPLE!! It is recommended you do not drink alcohol while taking some medications.

Overuse of Acetaminophen can damage your liver!!!!

Overuse of ibuprofen can seriously damage your digestive system, interfere with your hormones, and increase your risk of heart attacks and stroke. In some cases, ibuprofen overdose can be deadly.

A toxic dose of aspirin is 200 to 300 mg/kg (milligrams per kilogram of body weight), and ingestion of 500 mg/kg is potentially lethal. In chronic overdose a lower level of aspirin in the body can result in serious illness. Much lower levels can affect children.

https://www.mountsinai.org/health-library/poison/aspirin-overdose#:~:text=A%20toxic%20dose%20of%20aspirin,lower%20levels%20can%20affect%20children.

While taking an occasional aspirin or two is safe for most adults to use for headaches, body aches or fever, daily use of aspirin can have serious side effects, including gastrointestinal bleeding.

And yes, I know you're talking about combining with ibuprofen, but the OP mentions vodka, and I'd written a reply about this here earlier but apparently forgot to finish posting it after previewing.

while posting about Irish blues-rock legend Rory Gallagher (who died much too young) in the Music Appreciation group:

https://democraticunderground.com/103468299

Gallagher had been prescribed legal drugs to cope with his fear of flying. Those drugs caused stomach pain which he was given acetaminophen for. That plus his drinking caused liver failure so quickly he needed a transplant, and he contracted MRSA while in the hospital, in intensive care, and died.

Can't help wondering how much better he would have done with different prescriptions, or maybe NO prescriptions.

Acetaminophen all by itself, even if you don't drink, can cause serious liver damage if you take more than 4 grams a day.

Your link stresses concern for chronic heavy drinkers.

“Over time, chronic, heavy alcohol intake depletes your liver of its glutathione stores, which can lead to problems when acetaminophen is added to the mix,” Dr. Lindenmeyer says.

Will Tylenol after a few drinks harm your liver?

Typically, taking a normal dose of acetaminophen (no more than 4,000 mg in a day) after one night of drinking should not cause liver damage. However, regular, heavy alcohol use (more than one drink daily for women or more than two drinks daily for men) combined with repeated daily doses of acetaminophen predisposes the liver to acetaminophen-associated toxicity.

notice that it calls more than one drink daily for women and two drinks daily for men "heavy alcohol use" when many would consider that simply ordinary social drinking, and light drinking in a lot of situations (college kids partying, for instance).

Alcohol makes it more toxic. Drinking also increases the chances that you'll forget how much acetaminophen you've taken and take an overdose.

NAFLD or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease caused by obesity is very common in the US, with many people who have it unaware that they have it, and acetaminophen is riskier for those people.

Most people simply don't know how well their livers can handle acetaminophen. So it's best to be cautious.

and noticed how much easier it was. I didn't need any tools. When I open a fresh bottle of ibuprofen, vinegar, and some other items, I've tried the gripper I have, pliers, vice grips, or whatever else till I can get the bottle open. Drives me crazy. I am careful for my own use, and remind people regularly about avoid mixes that can harm you. Over 30 years ago, I had an ex-Army dr. He told me then to limit the use of Tylenol. said you could take a bunch and your pain would be gone, but 3 days later so would your liver. Never forgot his graphic advice

I used to go to a local club to see bands. The club would allow you to bring one bottle of water in, & they never checked it. So I brought my bottle of "water," bought a couple glasses of orange juice in the club, & enjoyed the show.
