How many people in their lifetime will ever bobsled
How many people will do curling in their lifetime
How many people will ever figure skate in their lifetime.
I just asked this because in the major sports people getting the gold medals are competing against millions and millions of others so it just seems the people winning a gold medal in some of these Olympic sports is way less competitive

(14,966 posts)one of those ski jumping events with twists and flips... Like bobsled, it is a totally purpose-built facility which cannot be approximated by anything other than an equivalent purpose built facility for that event.
The pool of people with access to such facilities is miniscule compared to any track and field events or swimming events in the summer olympics, or even cross country skiing in the winter.

(14,015 posts)I hit a thin sheet coming out of a movie theatre in the 70s, and managed to stick the landing after a wild 180 degree turn. The people waiting in line for the next showing gave me a nice round of applause.
Lost my first set of front teeth on a frozen lake.
We should head for the tropics, maybe.

(23,656 posts)Did you ever go to a skating rink and see little boys or girls learning to skate? Or to a ski slope and see young kids taking skiing lessons? Then they perfect their skills through many years competing in local, state, regional, then national competitions. The best in their sports make it to the Olympics to compete against the best from all over the globe.
Unlike team sports these are individual sports. There are some team competitions (hockey and curling for one), but the Olympics were created way back when, as individual competitions and that's pretty much how they've remained. There have been changes made throughout the years. Adding pro basketball players to the winter Olympics and MLB to the summer Olympics. There are no cash prizes, only the Olympic medal and the pride in ones accomplishments. The best do get endorsements and can trade on their success.
The individual athletes, they've worked hard to get where they are and they compete against the best in the world.

(11,631 posts)Don't get me wrong I love to watch most of this shit... they are dedicated athletes who have worked their asses off while 75% of whats on television is dumbass reality shows... yet it occurred to me.. how obscure are some of these winter sports when they have to spend half the telecast explaining the rules to us EVERY FOUR YEARS??
