Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsJust realized I'll be 65 tomorrow.
I really never think about it. If someone asks me how old I am I always have to stop and think. I feel bad sometimes that I never remember family members birthdays. I know some people consider that knowledge very important. Im usually lucky if I remember what month someones birthday is.

(10,154 posts)Which I am, but Im keeping my retiree health care. I think it might be automatic at 65 even if you are still working. My sister told me her husband, who is still working, has Medicare now. Knowing him, I doubt he did anything to sign up, but dont take it from me or stuff you read online. Check it out officially with Medicare. It does make me wonder if you get signed up and are still working, do they keep taking it out of your paycheck? Anyone in that situation? As I remember it was the second largest deduction from my pay, or nearly so.

(4,071 posts)I believe there is a penalty if you sign up later,,,,
Please just look into it to be sure. Better safe than sorry.

(21,738 posts)They said that Medicare should be the primary insurer and they would pay the rest.
Plus, there are penalties for late sign-up.

(145,079 posts)I signed up for Medicare. As a partner in my law firm, I pay for my insurance. Medicare with a supplement and drug plan is cheaper

(32,659 posts)He pulled out a $20 bill to give me. I said no way and he then told me how much it meant to have a young guy help him. Told me he'll be ok in a couple of year when he won't have all of his medical bills because he will be on Medi Care. I said. Sony I've been on it for 7 years.

(15,366 posts)65 is a magic age. As others have stated above, you will be eligible for Medicare!
Medicare is one of the few things in the US health care system that works, which is why GQPers hate it! Yes, it could be improved, e.g., there should be no necessity for a Medigap plan, etc. But still, it is such a comfort to realize that there are no more co-pays or other hassles for the most part.
Even better, you are edging closer to being eligible for SSI. It is not a lot, but it arrives every month.
Every day, I bless all those who made Medicare and SSI into realities for US citizens.
But we still lag behind Europe in these respects. Unfortunately.
And Happy Birthday, you young thing, from one who is nearing 80!

(20,235 posts)I still don't look 'my age' or even act like it.
I thot perhaps my hip chic-y hair, clothes, mannerism, my New England accent...
No matter. I had a laugh. 😄

(57,073 posts)Pls remember to look into Part D Medicare. The meds plans are not automatic & there is a1% per month penalty for life for each month you wait to sign up.
Your Council on Aging is a great resource to cut red tape regarding Medicare & they can tell you in a few min. Which plan covers any meds you take & which is least expensive.
Enjoy your special day!

(21,783 posts). . .growing old is not for sissies.
And don't forget your Medicare sign-up.
And if you can, wait a little longer until you reach "full retirement age" before you sign up for Social Security. (I plan to do that this August)

(1,241 posts)I also try not to think about it!
I am happy that I am healthy and exercise a lot.
The only regret, is that I used to always complain through the years that I was getting older.
I wish I hadnt done that because I wasted a lot of negative energy.
Have fun on your birthday!

(20,235 posts)Regarding Medicare enrollment early or full benefit age: I took early benefits after I did the math of not receiving the extra amount for 4 years. Didn't want to wait.
