who did a bit about Olympic medals. He said "If you win a gold medal, everyone congratulates you. If you win a bronze, they tell you how lucky you were to medal against such stiff competition. But if you win a silver, everyone just wants to know how much you lost by."

(4,795 posts)3. Not always. Each olympics, the hosting group gets to design the medals however they want.
Now while I agree that the gold medals aren't ever solid gold, other metals have been used. In 1992, in Norway, they were clear plastic with a block of polished granite inside.
