Just random luck. Depending on when I decided to play SHAVE, SHAPE, or SHADE it could just as easily have been a 3, a 5, a 6, or a fail.

Or maybe play something like POKED and/or MOVED to help narrow it down.

4-6 for me was Shale, Shade, Shake. Whew!

There's a penguin named Crosby at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh who, for some reason, couldn't seem to quit staring at this Blackhawks fan. What a cutie.

I did find out that SLAVE isn't in the word list. That was my first attempt in the second spot.

Now I know.

but I was also highly amused as it developed. I had realized pretty early on that there were an excess number of possibilities.

If there's nothing to gain from "losing", then there's no point to my playing the game.

I had to use a tactic I have not used before. After getting to SHA_E on my second try, I realized that there were more letters that could fit into that slot than there were guesses remaining: D K L M P V

Just brute-forcing it by guessing a new letter in that slot on each try would not guarantee victory, so I tried to eliminate as many of the remaining letters as possible in my next guess (MOPED) and then I got it when the K turned up in KILLS. If I'd blanked on both those words, the answer would have been SHAVE.
