Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy dismissive attitude towards the small snow berm at the end of the driveway was a HUGE mistake.
Because of the all too brief warm up, there's now a solid sheet of ice, about 3 or 4" thick, that I'm slowly but surely trying to remove, inch by inch, with a pick axe. It's quite a sight. I'm focusing on just one side of the driveway but it's still an arduous task.
Fortunately, I am well supplied and have zero plans or need to go anywhere until Mother Nature (hopefully) lends a hand, next week.
OK, I could use some potting soil but I bet if I check, I've got some around here, somewhere. Besides, I still have to figure out how I'm going to protect the seedling starts from my rambunctious and overly curious fur balls.
Which reminds me. It's quiet. Far TOO quiet. I'd best go see what they are up to.

(3,273 posts)I felt justified in my neglect of shoveling when it got up to 50 the other day.
Of course, there's still a ridge there in the edge of the driveway, and snow predicted tonight.

(26,251 posts)By next week it is supposedly going to warm up. If we get some sunshine, it might heat the pavement up enough to cause a void. That will make things MUCH easier. One good WHACK might break off a huge chunk.
And I COULD get out, if absolutely necessary. I'd just have to be careful.

(9,664 posts)ONLY 3 inches of packed sleet over about an inch of pure Michigan ice. Took all day yesterday to clear most of it. All the neighbors were out chopping and cussing, it was quite a crescendo of winter toil. Then the car we finally found the windshield after about an hour.
Why lucky? U.P. got anywhere between 30 to a rumored 50 inches. Roofs leaking, all the good stuff. As I said we lucked out.
Be careful
this 69 year old body is complaining today!

(26,251 posts)And it wasn't NEARLY that bad! Just bad enough to knock out my power for 6 days, and I live in a major retail area. The Winters of2013 through 2016 were just miserable.
This situation at the bottom of my driveway would be far worse if I hadn't taken the time and effort to clear the storm drain, and keep it clear. I used a plain old axe for that little job. I'll be keeping a close eye on it when all of this starts to melt.

(24,312 posts)The last few days were well above freezing and the show started to melt. Froze up overnight and now I have a solid sheet of ice in the driveway. I used all of my wood ashes that I keep in a metal can to spread on the driveway last week. I guess I will need to use snowmelt to get to the garage later today....
